I can't read schematics!

I am to replace my V7/S1/V8 im my Prestige. I am ready to go but find my Vs only have a red + shield and white coming out of them wired into the 5 way selector so it's not really giving me 5 ways. I want a Jem 5 way split with my new DMs but schematics hurt my head (along with sudoku and cryptic crosswords). Can anybody point me in the direction of an easier to understand diagram for the 5 way import switch?

Re: I can't read schematics!

Does your Prestige have the Jem type 5-way switch, or the cheap YM-50 switch? If it's the Jem switch, just follow the schematic for a Jem guitar.

Re: I can't read schematics!

Your switch probably has 8 contact (two poles with 4 contacts each). I think you'll be fine with that switch, just connect DM's red wire to wherever the white was on the old one, black and white together where the red was and green and bare where the shield was.

Re: I can't read schematics!

Looks like it's the cheap one with the 8 along the bottom.
Bancica - will that give me all the splits or just a 3 way HSH?
AlaskaBat - thanks, that's the sort of diagram I need - I may get one of those JEM switches and follow that one.

Re: I can't read schematics!

what do you mean by 3-way HSH? it's a 5-way switch that you have, right?

edit: I just saw that diagram...so your middle pickup is a humbucker as well? in that case you need a different switch if you want to split it too.

Re: I can't read schematics!

The S1 is a singlecoil. The schematic was provided to illustrate the Jem style super-switch, as opposed to the YM-50 type.

Re: I can't read schematics!

hmm, so what's the advantage of having a super switch (this looks like a super switch), I mean, the regular strat style switch will split two humbuckers without problems.

looking at the diagrams i have already accrued the DM red is the same as the V7-S1-V8 red. Shouldn't they be swapped like for like?

Re: I can't read schematics!

On 4-conductor DiMarzio pickups: black and white are soldered together and taped off. Green and bare go to the vol pot ground, and the red is hot (goes to the vol pot lug).

Thumbs up Re: I can't read schematics!

Panic over. I took into the Guitar Worksop at Ibstock Leicestershire yesterday. I've never had service like it. £25 for a new switch and a wire up-while i waited too on a Saturday!!!!!
