I love the Tone Zone..

So I finally got my hands in a Tone Zone. It's in my 99 3120, before it was an Evo2, and an Evo before that. I didn't think any DiMarzio could beat the Evo2, but I was wrong!!

It sure lives up to its name

Re: I love the Tone Zone..

It can get muddy in basswood. I spent some time working on basic mods to get it sound better, and I got there. Heaps of info on my blog on it.

Saying that, stock Tone Zone in alder is godly.

Re: I love the Tone Zone..

I Love mine too.
I have no problem with mud going through my rig.
That 375 output is the magic number for me.
Any higher and pickups are not warm enough for me and very touchy, tooo hot.
TZ or EVO 2, I can't make up my mind and why should I.
I canLove them both.

Re: I love the Tone Zone..

I think the TZ sounds almost identical to the Evo 2, with more bass. It's exactly what I needed. It seems to snatch up harmonics better too

It's the first time I've dropped a passive in a guitar and had it immediately make me smile. I didn't have to adjust anything.

This happened to me with a set of EVO 1's recently.

This guitar had Evo's when I bought it. I didn't care for it, went to EMG and that, even though I'm an active fan, felt like putting ketchup on steak in a guitar like the 3120. So I read every description DiMarzio had on the site, and was torn between the Evo 2 and Tone Zone. I opted for the Evo 2 which I love. The Tone Zone has all the characteristics of the Evo 2 plus more bottom end. I was sold. It's almost got a brown sound feel but with more juice, if that makes any sense..

Re: I love the Tone Zone..

I also have a 99 3120 and TZ always did it for me. After decreasing mid.s on the amp (or from pedal) everything is ok for the shred tone I prefer.

But with cleans (for me, the real benchmark) its really something, tones are great even without a single coil between humbuckers.

Re: I love the Tone Zone..

One Meg volume pot can fix a boomy tone zone in basswood/mahogany. Great pickup in Mahogany with a maple top.
