Ibanez RG 1570 Pickup mod question

Good afternoon.

I just picked my first Ibanez RG after playing mostly fenders and gibsons. I absolutely love the guitar, but I was looking to reverse the neck pickup (V7) coil splitting. In position 2 I want the outside coil on the neck pickup in combination with the middle to get more "air" between the pickups. Currently, I don't feel there's enough body to the sound in that position. Basically I'm looking to get a more "strat-like" position 2.

I know what is often said about V7/8 pickups, and I do plan to change them when I can afford to, but for the time being, I'd like to be able to see what tones I can achieve with the stock pu's. So I'm just wondering if there's anyone else who's done this who can shed some light on this before I go cutting wires!

Perform the "Phantom Mod" and swap the magnets between the V7 & V8.

it is easier to get a new switch that does what you want it to do. I am not sure what switch you have in there now and if it can do what you want it to.

as far as the v-7 and v-8. Some sound better than others imo. you can try switching the around (v logo to the neck side of the pickup) and see if that makes any difference to you.

Also dont be affraid to play with the height of the pickups, use different picks, and strings.

Yeah, I was going to say, just flip the neck, then you don't need to worry about wiring and soldering.

And yeah, try my magnet swapping mod. Makes a huge difference to the tone.

Thanks guys! I was thinking of just flipping the pickup, I was just curious what wiring options there were since the V pu's are only 3 conductor. I'll give the flip a try and let you know!

Re: Ibanez RG 1570 Pickup mod question

Hey all. Just wanted to let you know, I tried flipping it. Worked like a charm! Had an argument with my roommate about it. He isn't a guitarist, but he knows his electronics. He tried to illustrate to me why it wouldn't work/cause the bridge position to go dead regardless of the fact that I have over 15 years experience modding my own instruments. You should've seen the look on his face when I plugged it in! LOL!

Good stuff! Now try swapping the magnets around. You'll be glad you did.
