i'm new!

hi there guys..
i've got a black rg550 reissue that i intend modding by replacing all the picks..
i'll bet all my questions have been asked a squillion times before but hey! i'm a newbie!

i've had jems with both paf pros (a desert yellow jem) and evo's (jem bsb)..
so i figured i'd have a change and try a tone zone at the bridge..

what is the best single coil for the middle? is the "jem single coil" the same as any other dimarzios? but re-badged for the jem?

I want a nice flutey sort of sound on the neck humbucker..what's best for that?

also...cosmetically speaking..what colour combination shall i go for against a black body and scratchplate??
i thought pink and red!

Re: i'm new!

i;ve done a bit of searching around this site..i'm gonna go for a tone zone at the bridge for sure..but i'm still unsure about what the best neck 'bucker and middle singe coil.
i really like positions 2 & 4 so the single coil is gonna be important.

Re: i'm new!

Virtual 2 bridge model in t he middle position works for me. The TZ pairs nicely with the Air Norton. I prefer the PAF Pro in basswood.

Yes it does! Most RG's have basswood bodies.

Re: i'm new!

i don't wanna open a can of worms here...but i've had 3 jems..and ended up selling or part ex-ing them..my fave of the three was the jem bsb.

i've been without an ibanez for 3 or 4 years and since buying the rg550 for £300 last week i can honestly say that it's every bit as good as the jem (except for the pickups)..i can live without the lion's claw recess, monkey grip, fancy inlay, irritating jack socket placement & finally the last four frets scalloped..
the playability is every bit as good as any of the jems i had. it took me 30mins to restring it, drop the action and have the action feeling like buttered elastic!
awsome value for money..

i just can't wait till payday to get some new pickups!!

the guitar is all black except for the maple board...i may go for white pickups, knobs and selector tip..

come on guys..help me out with the colour scheme here!

If you want to play with color schemes to get an idea of what you're guitar might look like before doing mods, check out the KISEKAE site....

Based on your last post there, I did a quick one to show you what it might look like:

Re: i'm new!

Then again, if it were mine, I'd order a pearl white pickguard with no tone control, replace the 5-way toggle with a 3-way and drop EMGs in it.

But that's just me.

Re: i'm new!

awsome link mate!

i like ur emg idea too...
i notice that u'd have a 3 way switch..does that mean u cannot split the coils in an emg?

Re: i'm new!

You can with an EMG 89, but I usually don't bother with them.
I prefer the 81/85 with an SA in the middle if I have to have a middle single coil.
The simplicity is more desirable to me than the ability for a bunch of different switching options.
