Losing output from PU

1987 Ibanez RG550.

My Super Distortion bridge pickup started losing power so I resoldered the hot wire directly to the volume pot and voila started sounding great again.

By losing power I mean it goes from sounding like high gain distortion to low gain crunch, very noticable.

Then I started losing power after an hour of playing on/off, so this time I stripped my wires, cleaned the solder etc, same thing happens, sounds great for a bit then goes south.

I have a new volume pot, new switch, my amp's been tested and I eliminated the cords.

I'm running out of ideas.

I'm going to buy another SD and try that.

Could it be the wires? I replaced alot of them with wiring from The Source.
Or bad soldering? I think my soldering is adequate. There's definitely no loose connections.

Also, if I move the main black wire from the SD100 (the one that houses the other 5 wires) the output does change.

Re: Losing output from PU

Sounds like the switch is starting to fail. Is it a regular YM-50?

Yes but I installed a new Stew Mac super switch, wired according to their instructions.

Turned out to be a bad pickup. Can you believe it? The other weird thing I noticed was the 2 coils started to separate a bit, the 2 outside edges started to pull down like this /\

I now have a brand new SD100, switch and vol pot.

What are you doing with the old one? If you were just going to bin it could you send it to me. I'd like to have a go at repairing it.

I'm going to see if DiMarzio will replace it.

No worries, thought it might have been an old one.
