Middle single coil question

Okay I've been playing around with the 5-way switches on all of my Ibbys lately and something I never thought about (but is one of the reasons I like ibanez so it's really weird):

What are the qualities that make a good middle single coil pickup? Should middle singles be lower output than the humbuckers? Is it better to have similar output levels to the buckers?

Re: Middle single coil question

It's all about your taste.
The main thing is that the middle pickup is reverse wound.
If it is not, you need some serious wiring to make thing sound correct.

How so? What does reverse winding do to make it sound correct?

Re: Middle single coil question

the middle pickup has to be in reversed polarity otherwise the 2 and 4 positions will sound very weak and trebly. This is about magnetic fields polarity I guess

yeah, I tried to put a bridge single coil in the middle position on one of my RG's.. sounded just like he said, weak and gross. I though it was my bad wiring

Did you take back the old pup and order a new one with reversed polarity?

I hear ya.. every other guitar I have has a neck humbucker so I thought I'd do something new with this one.
