Mystery DiMArzio

I jus pulled out a mystery Dimarzio from a Kramer I recently bought. The plate of the pickup just says "Dimarzio Pickups, Made in U.S.A. There is a white lead, a black lead, and a bare lead.

The multimeter is reading around 13.68K resistance. According to DiMarzio's website, the Super Distortion and the Dual Sound have that same resistance, but I'm not sure.

Any ideas?

Re: Mystery DiMArzio

how old's the Kramer? I think Super Distortions were originally designed as 3-wire humbuckers when they first came out (like early 70s?).
DiMarzio's usually correct on their ohm readings... I had a mystery DiMarzio a few years ago that looked like a TZ but wasn't sure [DP- sticker was removed and came from the early 90s).... I installed it and it sounded like a TZ... but just to be just sure, I borrowed my neighbors voltmeter and the reading was dead-on the TZ but my skepticism still led me to call DiMarzio... one of the guys I spoke to on the phone confirmed it when I told him the resistance reading.
So ya, if it sounds like a Super Distortion, it probably is!

Re: Mystery DiMArzio

The pickups are aftermarket, as this pickup was in a routed neck spot (this particular Kramer was a originally a one-pickup guitar). But I'm 99% it's an old Super Distortion.

Why did Dimarzio use three wires on the early one-conductor Super Distortions when they could have just used a hot and a ground?

And also, if the new Super Distortions have 4-conductor wiring, what is the point of the Dual Sound, since it was originally supposed to be the 4-conductor version of the Super Distortion?

Re: Mystery DiMArzio

Nevermind, just found out via Dimarzio's FAQ. Doh!

"What's the difference between a Super Distortion® and a Dual Sound®?

In our current production, there is no difference whatsoever, but we include a free mini switch with the Dual Sound®. Our original Super Distortion® had 1 conductor plus shield. We introduced the Dual Sound® with three conductors plus shield to allow more wiring options. As guitar manufacturers and players became more sophisticated, the market demanded four conductors plus shield on all humbuckers, so both models now have four conductors, as do all of our full-size humbuckers."
