Need help choosing a single coil for Evo2/PafPro pair

1. What type of music do you like? The safety fire, Dream theater, scar symmetry, opeth,
2. What type of equipment are you going to be playing through?
Hughes & Kettner Triamp MKII, ISP decimator. Soon to sell this and aquire an Axe Fx II for recording.
3. What are the specifics of your guitar?
Ibanez S5EX1- Ibanez saber with mahagony body and zebrawood vaneeer
A. Is it a trem or hardtail? Trem
B. maple or rosewood board?
C. how many frets?
24 frets
D. what controls are on it?
Tone + Volume + 5 way selector H-S-H
E. What type of wood is you body made from?
F. Are your pickups direct mounted, ring mounted or in a pickguard?
Ring mounted

I've finnally settled on trying out the Evo2 and PafPro combo for a new guitar. I was wondering which single coil would go well with it. I want to have acoustic like cleans - sort of like Opeth.

I'm leaning towards the Dimarzio Area 61 or blue Velvet. Would these pair up well with the Evo2 and PafPro?

Also is it alright that I'd have the pafpro in the bridge and the and Evo2 in the neck?

Evo 2 is much more powerful than the PAF Pro. Put the PAF Pro in the neck.

I like the HS-2 for a single.

If you want a real single coil sound, the noiseless range isn't the way to go, i believe. They're convincing enough in most situations, but as you said, you want acoustic qualities out of your single coils, so i'm imagining a very clean sound, so the noiseless element would be pretty useless in your situation.

It's a shame i have no idea what the single coil in my ibanez S470 is, cause i absolutely love the sound of it.

I would either use, Area 67 (DP419), Area 58(DP415), or Area 61(DP416). You can go wrong with any one of these. The order I have is from lowest output to high. I currently have this set installed in my strat, Area 58(N), Area 67(M), and Area 61(B). I personally like the Area 67 middle position the most for it great clean sound.

Re: Need help choosing a single coil for Evo2/PafPro pair

I've got an Area 67 in the neck and 61 in the middle of my Strat right now (and a AT1 in the bridge) and while they're not QUITE as transparent as a true singlecoil, they're really damned close. Here's a comparison of my current set against the Fender Custom 69 neck/Texas Special middle that they replaced - the fenders do sound a little better clean, but the Areas are more versatile, IMO.

However, an important additional question - are you hoping the singlecoil will be comparable in output the the neck and bridge humbucker, or do you want it to have a noticeable volume drop? If you don't want it to drop in volume, then one of the major advantages of the Areas is they have such low magnetic pull that you can set them quite close to the strings. However, the Heavy Blues 2 is also worth a look, as it's much higher output while still acceptably singlecoil-like. You lose some of the glassiness and sparkle, but tonally I suspect it would balance much better with 'buckers than a true singlecoil.

Re: Need help choosing a single coil for Evo2/PafPro pair

thanks guys.

I still want to retain the glassiness and sparkle to the single coil tone. Should I choose a lower output pup? I don't want significant volume drops when switching pup settings. I'm afraid that if the output isn't comparable to the evo2 and paf pro then the spliting with the single coil may make cause volume drops.

Thinking aloud its not a bad thing. If the split tones are slightly quieter then hitting the bridge or neck humbuckers on its own will cause a significant volume boost.

Regarding the evo2 in the bridge - i know per from Scar symmetry just uses a single paf pro in the bridge and nothing else. His lead tone is phenomenal.
