Pickup high and tone?

Hey everyone. How does the high of your pickups alter tone? Or does it only alter volume? And how about clarity and string-pull?

Thanks in advance I couldn't find it with the search option,

Re: Pickup high and tone?

Also another thing....when trying to raise my neck-pickup (4mm when depressed at 24th fret now ) to 2mm I can't. I need to get under the pickup to put something in there but the problem is that I can't get the pickup out. The wiring is holding me back from doing it I think. Any tips?

Re: Pickup high and tone?

Generally, the closer your pickup is to the string, here's what happens.

1. Louder
2. Less treble, more of a middy, punchy sound. Can get "mushy" REAL quick.
3. Less clarity and articulation.

So, you sort of go from a PAF Pro sound (far) to a Tone Zone sound (closer), and everything in-between.

As for fixing the pickup height, sounds like you have an old pickup in there maybe? Like the wire leads are pretty short. Only solution I can see to this is to disconnent the pickup, put in your shim, and then re-wire it (but then, there are smarter people around here who might have a better idea.

Re: Pickup high and tone?

Could you maybe pull out both of the screws, tilt the pickup, and stuff a piece of foam in there?

I recommend setting the pickups lower, anyway. It gives you a clearer sound. Setting them too high just seems to makes things get mushy, and indistinct.

Re: Pickup high and tone?

I did it today....

I just had to pull them out harder That worked.....
I then put some wood under it (2mm wood) and that worked great. Before they could move around a bit and now they are totally stuck in there. Much better.

My PAF Pro is 2mm from 24fret depressed looking at first contact point and my tonezone is around 3mm. They sound better now and the volumes are equal. Bit more balls in it and a little bit better dynamics (atleast I think so).

Must admit that most of the time I only use the PAF Pro. Bet I just like the neck position more. It gives me a more distinct and more controlled sound. The bridge is too muddy for my taste. Or maybe it's the Tone Zone I don't know...just don't like it....

*by the way....I had to use the wood because I screwed them down before but you can't get them back up again after you screwed them down. Didn't know that back then*

Re: Pickup high and tone?

I had a guitar once that had small pieces of foam rubber under the pickups. That helped keep them in there firmly, and acted as a spring when you wanted to raise them.
