Pickup opinion for 2002 JEM 7VWH

I want to change the original EVO's.

I am trying to get a very saturated, yet clear, gain tone that I can get George Lynch style tone with. Also some very high gain "death metal" type rhythm tone. Yeah yeah, wrong guitar etc.....

I was thinking Screamin' Demon or maybe EVO II?

Amplification:

ADA MP-1 / Mesa 20/20 Tube poweramp / Mesa 2x12 rectocab

Noted. My preamp isn't "stock" though, it has the JCM 2203 mod. It has a lot more gain than a normal MP-1.

Re: Pickup opinion for 2002 JEM 7VWH

Is that the 3 tube mod? If you want to try something to change your tone without changing your pickups, try putting a BBE sonic maximizer between the preamp and the power amp, you'd be surprised at how closer you get to getting a clean saturated gain tone just by doing that and not having to change your pickups..BBE's can really clean up a MP-1...

For your sound options I think the Evo might be ok for you, love mine and play similar styles.

Evo 2 is versatile, articulate and well defined. Definitely, doesn't get lost in the mix!

Anyone ever try Breeds???

(IMHO) Their versitaliy blows EVO's out of the door. Don't be fooled by all the "oh they only make good as blues pups", EJ must have designed them BS

I will possibly try them again as it has been many years since I owned a DBK with Breeds. From what I remember, they didn't have alot of "cut" but did have an overall nice tone.

The EVO II's have just been working great for me to cut thru the mix when distorted and when clean. They are "tight" sounding with more presence than the Breeds (IIRC) and even have lots of dynamics when rolling back the volume a little.

Which guitar do you have Breeds in JJEMMER?

Ah, that's the one I forgot that came with Breeds. Was the BRMR and the DBK the only models with Breeds installed stock? What is in your EVH Jem?

I try to stay with the forum etiquette of using your screenname, Jimbo

DNA = Breeds / 77VBK = Breeds!

I haven't browsed the spec pages in awhile, slipped my mind about the DNA and I guess I haven't even looked closely at the specs for the VBK but I should have assumed they are Breeds seeing how it replaced the BRMR.

Re: Pickup opinion for 2002 JEM 7VWH

get a decent rack eq, too. a nice 31 band can be had for less than $100 and that WILL give you the tone you want. you can be anally retentive on how you set your eq curve and scoop out even more mids, add up to 12-15 db of low end and highs to make your rig scream. it in fact becomes an active eq rig and will give you way more scuplting possibilities than what the bbe will give you. personally, i hate bbe's on guitar, but love them on bass and pa. i own 4 of them myself. 3 in my pa rig and one on my bass rig, imo, they don't let the highs and high mids breathe well, but that may be what your looking for. i do know for a fact that the eq will focus your sound and make it massive at the same time. i used to use a dual 15 band eq for my old 5150 rig. one channel in the preamp section(does very little) and in the loop(this is where the magic happens).
