Pickup problem

I got a Douglas Spad as a birthday gift from my significant other, and the bridge humbucker has never really worked well. If I touch the mounting screws, I get a lot of hum (no problem on the neck pickup), and if I touch a string tot he bridge pickup, it cuts out. Could it be a bad pickup? just a bad ground? I'm wondering if there's any way to actually solve this problem easily as I am not exactly a whiz with a soldering iron.

Re: Pickup problem

Sounds like a ground issue.

Re: Pickup problem

That's what I thought too, but everything seems to be well-grounded -- I even pulled the bridge and improved the main ground under the post insert.

How can I check the ground with a voltmeter?

Re: Pickup problem

A ground under a post insert? Never saw one there before. What guitar is this on? For guitars with a trem, I always drill a small hole in the trem spring claw and solder the main ground to that. On non-trem axes, I drill a small hole inside the control cavity, insert a small screw and small washer, and wrap the ground wire to that and solder.

Re: Pickup problem

The ground being under the bridge insert (TOM bridge) is pretty standard from what I understand.
