Pickup problem??

I had my dad install some new dimarzio pickups in my Ibanez Maxxas guitar. Once I played through my amp it did not sound right. The distortion was very weak and sort of kept fading in and out. On the clean it was a little better. Any ideas?

Re: Pickup problem??

New guy/old fart here.
Sounds like you may only have one side of the pickup working--or a bad solder joint.
Can you post pics of the switch lugs?
Is it on all pickups, or just one?

Re: Pickup problem??

The pickup/pickups are probably wired in out of phase.
Basically wrong color cable at the wrong place.

Have a look at the wiring diagram and sort it out.

Re: Pickup problem??

Impossible to see on the photo, sorry.

But if it is DiMarzio should red go to hot (switch), bare (no plastic around it) and green to ground (house of pott) and black and white soldered together and taped over (not touching anything).

House of pott? I feel like smoking pott after seeing all these colored wires going in all crazy directions...

Re: Pickup problem??

UPDATE....I have noticed when i turn the tone knob all the way down the volume goes down a little..is this a tell tale sign of something afoot? My dad swears he wired it exactly the way the other pickups were wired.....hmmm

Re: Pickup problem??

Can't tell anything in that pic...other than the fact that you might want to upgrade to a better switch.

Re: Pickup problem??

I just looks old and cheap--is it the original?
If not--try an Otax or a Super Switch.
these will give you plenty of options.

Re: Pickup problem??

By chance, do you have a multimeter that you can use?
You could start shooting wires to pinpoint the issue.
