Smile Pickups for Dream Theater and Andy James music

Hello everybody

i'd like some help because i want to change my pickups for a while, and i think it's time to get it seriously.

1. I play progressive metal and metalcore mostly :
  • Andy James (Sacred Mother Tongue)
  • Trivium
  • Dream Theater
  • Avenged Sevenfold
  • Jeff Loomis (Nevermore)
  • also some classics such as Metallica, Megadeth (but i don't particularly want a sound like theirs)

2. I own a Blackstar HT 5 Guitar Combo Amplifier :
  • Innovative 5 Watt valve amplifier
  • 1xECC83 and 1x12BH7 valves
  • 10-inch Celestion speaker

3. My guitar is a Cort Aero-11 :
  • Body Wood: Mahogany
  • Carved Top: Yes
  • Neck Shape: C-shaped neck
  • Neck Joint: Bolt-on
  • Neck Wood: Canadian Maple
  • Scale Length: 25 1/2″ (648mm)
  • Fretboard: Rosewood, 12″ Radius(305mm)
  • Fingerboard Inlays: White Dot
  • Number of Frets: 22 / Large (2.7mm)
  • Tuners: Die-cast
  • Bridge: Wilkinson VS50 Tremolo
  • Hardware: Black Nickel
  • Number of Pickups: 3 (2 x single coil & 1 x humbucker)
  • Pickup Switch Type: 5-Position Blade
  • Pickups: Hot rail BKRSS-F & BBEG5-M & MMHGB-R(S-S-H)
  • Electronics: 1 volume, 1 tone, 5-way lever
My pickups are direct mounted.

4. I want to change my pickups because they lack of diversity :

  • when i'm on the clean channel, only the middle position makes a correct sound and when i'm on the overdrive channel, only the furthest from my guitar makes it (which produces heavy low chords for metal, i think it's the "high-note position")
  • for these 2 channels (out of the 10 available), they are just cool, but nothing too extraordinary.

5. I don't have brands in particular. I just know that :
EMG :
  • Andy James (solo // lead - Sacred Mother Tongue)
  • Matt Heafy (lead and rhythm - Trivium)
  • James Hetfield (rhythm - Mettalica)
  • Jeff Loomis (solo // lead - Nevermore)
DiMarzio :
  • John Petrucci (lead and rhythm - Dream Theater)
  • Chris Broderick (lead and rhythm - Megadeth)
Seymour Duncan :
  • Dave Mustaine (lead and rhythm - Megadeth)
  • Synyster Gates (lead - Avenged Sevenfold)
6. I don't have great problems on my guitar, maybe just when my pickups are on the "high-note position" when i play clean, there are kind of reverb-middle-high-pitched-"pop".

I hope all these information can help you, and so you'll be able to help me :P

Thanks for the help

Try the DiMarzio Dominion set, they should get in the middle of both Petrucci and James, and the other stuff you want to play.

i would say a d-sonic and either an air norton or humbucker from hell in the neck. Depends on if you want warmer or brighter in the neck.

The d-sonic is very clear crunchy and heavy. John used it before the crunch lab, and several other metal guys have used it as well.

the air norton is warm and clear. Again john used it for a while.

The hum from hell is bright, full and very clear. Paul gilbert used it for a while and it is one of may favorite dimarzio pickups.

Seems to be an HSS Guitar. D-Sonic + Air norton single sized humbucker plus a ISCV2 evo single coil on the middle

good catch. I freaking love the new transition pickups from dimarzio. Steve was an emg player for a long time. They dont put off any audible hum and are very full and clear.

I would go with a d-sonic, dominion, or maybe transition in the bridge

transition single coil in the middle

and either the transition neck or air norton single in the neck position
