Positions 2 and 4 work, but very quietly.....any ideas?

hi,

I've used this exact wiring diagram for a Strat with a 5-Way and an AT-1 in the Bridge, Pro Track in the Neck, and a Fender Texas Special (Reverse Polarity Middle) in the Middle:

I've checked and rechecked the wiring. there are no bad wires or shorts. all the pickups and controls work exactly as they should (I've checked by tapping the polepieces), but the only problem is that positions 2 and 4 are MUCH quieter than the others. I have to turn my amp up a lot to get the same level of volume.

I can still play the guitar fine, it's just annoying to have to make an adjustment to the volume, and I'm sure something must not be right.

the only difference in the wiring is that I used a Tex Spec middle pup with the black going to ground and the other (yellow I think) to the volume pot.

I know there is some volume loss from splitting a humbucker, but, for example on my RG, there is hardly any volume loss in positions 2 and 4. (it's not the same kind of switch, but the humbuckers are still split).

any ideas?

thanks a bunch for reading this and letting me know what you think.

switch the middle single coil wires around should fix it.

I'd say that's the cause too. Sounds like the middle is ending up out of phase.

This can happen with one of two cases.
You have three coils on at once or the single coil needs the wire switched, ground and hot flip.

Re: Positions 2 and 4 work, but very quietly.....any ideas?

^I don't think it's three coils at once as there is no sound from the grounded side of the humbuckers when I tap on them, and that side, the black and white wires, are definitely getting dumped straight to the back of the volume pot when position 2 or 4 is selected.

I had wondered if switching the middle pup wires would be the issue, but I don't know enough about pickups to figure out why.

thanks for the help everyone. I'll see if it sorts it out.

great to have these helpful replies so quickly. I thought this would just end up dropping off the page. -cheers.

lol! forgot to mention that..

it was the middle pickup wiring. I switched them round, so the 'live' yellow wire now goes to ground, and the black 'ground' goes to the switch.

pickup volume back to normal now.
