Pots & Capacitors

I have a rg 570 with a Norton(bridge) and EVolution(Neck). Playing mostly 80's rock on this guitar. Its buzzing so Im gonna replace the Pots and capacitor. Im looking at the Dimarzio 500k pots and a orange drop .022 400v capacitor. Any suggestions. Also should I replace linear pot for tone and log for volume? Some manufactures only list audio pots. Thanks

Re: Pots & Capacitors

I would use an audio taper pot for both. I've had issues and so have others with a linear taper tone pot. Ibanez will often use a linear for the volume and audio for the tone.

As far as brands, I'd go with cts or bourns over dimarzio. Dimarzio just rebadges some made in china **** if my memory serves me correct.

yup, Dimarzio pots and the like are garbage. Pickups are good, everything else not so much.

Re: Pots & Capacitors

I decided to try the EVH low friction and see how the do. I went with a orange drop .022 400v capacitor. Im thinking of using a treble bleed, but when I roll off the volume knob im not really loosing alot of high frequence. So not sure if i really need it?

Re: Pots & Capacitors

I've put treble bleeds in a few guitars and never really saw any benefit to it. I prefer the way the volume knob behaves without it.

Ibanez wiring has a treble bleed in as standard.

Dimarzio pots are made by CTS to Dimarzio specs.

True. Also, EVH pots I think are the same (or maybe just made by) Bournes.

Re: Pots & Capacitors

I usually just clip in different caps until I find the right sound then solder it in place. Different guitars will require different values -- seldom two are alike. At times I've had to go up to .5 uF just to get the exact sound I want.

Cheers,

Race

Did this start on particular models or a particular time period? I've had roughly a dozen older Ibanez RGs open (90s models) and never found any treble bleeds in the circuits.

Re: Pots & Capacitors

I'm wiring up a spare S540 at the moment. Bought as a separate neck and body.
Doing my own Frankenstein to some degree but NOT because a famous guy once did it. Just because I like DOING it.'
Any rate. What I have recently learned about caps. If you keep the treble all the way UP, changing caps is pointless.
All they do is determine how much treble you lose when you turn the treble DOWN.
Funny, but I can never seem to get ENOUGH treble, so I never turn them down.
So - in reality I don't need caps at ALL.
I'll almost certainly put one in but just wondered if I was alone in this.
Marshall 2204 with several different -mostly Ibanez- guitars. ts808.
V1, V2, Mo Joe, PAF Joe and the like...
Then again, I almost always play the neck pups ONLY. I like the fuller grind in em.
Maybe playing the bridge pup and turning down the treble WOULD work...
Hmmm
Maybe I am answering my own quiestion here...
Sorry
Just thinking out loud...

But yes, for what I have read, caps are all about how much treble to lose...
With 20+ guitars I only recently found that out.
Thought I'd share
