Problem Lowering pickup

I have a problem of the screw on teh bridge pickup on the side closest to the Tone and Volume knobs.
When I try to back of the screw to lower
the pickup it creates a gap between the guard
and the bottom of the screw much too early
(still about 8mm of the pickup sticking out)
and the other pickups I can loosen flush with
the gaurd and the screw wil lstill be touching
the gaurd. I'm getting loss of sustain especially on harmonics and pinch harmonics exactly the same as this guy: http://www.jemsite.com/forums/showth...ht=JEM+sustain

When I tried to lower the pickups I came across this problem.

Is there anything I can do short of taking the whole gaurd off and looking inside?

Thanks

Re: Problem Lowering pickup

You need a longer spring. You can do a couple of things to fix this- Take your existing spring and stretch it, or you could put a piece of foam on the screw with the spring. The foam will also help with feedback.

Re: Problem Lowering pickup

It really has nothing to do with how old the guitar is- You just want to set the pickups lower than the springs will allow. It's a common thing to run into, and one that I deal with on most guitars. IMO, most guitars sound like crap with the pickups set as close to the strings as most(it seems) like them to.
