PRS 59/09 pickups for Ibanez5470?

Hi All,

I am new to the forum so please excuse my n00b-ness.

Question:

I would like to replace my current humbuckers (neck + bridge) in my S5470 for some PRS 59/09's! I would like to try doing it myself but have no experience whatsoever with swapping guitar electronics.
Can anybody help get me started for things I must know before starting, etc?
Is there any kind of funky impedance matching or anything I must do to prevent noise? What kind of issues should I try to prevent running into?

Specifics:

I can solder and I have all of the necessary equipment on hand.
I would like to install the two 59/09 pick ups and use my 5-way switch to switch between the humbuckers, (ike in the 2012 PRS custom 24) leaving the single coil inactive (I don't use it often).

I don't want anyone to do it for me, but any links to necessary guides/info is GREATLY appreciated! Also advice is always welcome.

EDIT:

I have found schematics on this site for the Ibanez S5470 wiring, and the PRS wiring for the 59/09's. Is it really as simple as switching a humbucker set for another humbucker set?

Thanks!!

-Shawn

If you can solder you'll be able to do it.

Look at the sticky thread at the top of this sub-forum, there is a wealth of information and links in there. I'm sure you'll be able to find something that will work for you in terms of diagrams and tutorials.
Oh but your standard 5 way strat style switch won't be much good for just using two humbuckers. You'll need a specialised switch for that. You'll see when you start looking at diagrams and stuff.

Ohhh.. I need to buy a different switch? That is a bummer.

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated! I will continue to look into it.

I would agree for this with the typical switching, however seymour duncan has a little something worked out using a 5-way strat style switch.

Yeah, I've personally not found it to be a very desirable way of running it though. It's a little all over the place. When I want my neck pickup I want it at the end of my pickup selector, not in the middle. I've tried wiring the setup in a better way but not had the best luck.

Very interesting option! Okay guys, since I am a complete noob, I am thinking of simply keeping my H-S-H set up and just replacing both Ibanez humbuckers for PRS ones (and keeping the single coil in use). This could be an easier option for a first guitar mod project. If I want to go for the H-H configuration then I can make that project #2

The thing is that the PRS pick ups are 3-conductor. So I am changing a 4-conductor pickup for a 3-conductor one. Do I just need to split my PRS's common tap wire into two parts and use that common wire to replace the areas that currently accommodate the current IBZ 4 - conductor's (-) screw coil and the (+) slugs coil?

Oh geez that may not make sense.

No you'll be fine. In the situation you're wiring two of the four conductor wires are soldered together first and then attached to one lug of the switch. No need to perform any surgery on the PRS pickups.

Re: PRS 59/09 pickups for Ibanez5470?

Hello guys!

I am very excited to tell you about my simple pick up swap. It went great, and gave me some added confidence for future mods (althought it does not get much more perfect than the one I just did!)

The PRS 59/09's are unreal. They do everything and more.

Neck: Such a fat smooth sound. It rolls and glides and is smoother than baby sh*t. It is colourful and rich. It's like diving into a pool of honey.

Bridge: Brighter of course, but wow does it ever punch a hole through the air. It holds its colour, even when distorted. I have also never had a pickup ring so clear through a high gain channel. Nice and twangy when used with single coil on clean channel.

I want to lock myself in my room for days and just rock out. But unfortunately I must work... at the job that got me all this wonderful gear.

Here are a couple pictures.

(Jemsite wouldn't let me submit links until I have more posts.. hmph

Thanks, guys!

Not sure what's wrong with the first link, but here you go.

Glad to hear it all worked out.
