Smile RG 370dx Basswood pickups upgrade .

Hello everyone ,

I'm Zach from India , new to this forum and i've been hunting for good advice on all forums possible . So here's my setup:

RG370DX GP-1
Basswood body
Maple Neck
Rosewood fretboard
Stock pickups
Edge- III bridge ..

POD X3 Live

Marshall 30 dfx mic'd (SM57)

I need to upgrade my pickups to something better . Now i know anything
would sound better than those damn infinities but i still need to know the ideal combo..

My interests are basically all kinda of classic rock stuff , thrashy metal , prog stuff like dt ...also vai satriani and all of that ...also maybe a lil blues jazz etc ...

I'm looking for pickups which would compliment/compensate for the basswood tonal issues and the extra "trebley"ness ..

(so basically lesser of the "sharp"ness and the twangy highs and more smooth and warm tone ...)

I started my hunt open to all pickups but now i've narrowed it down to DiMarzio or Seymour Duncan passives ...

Would really appreciate any kind of suggestions about good pickup combos (DM or SD )...and why they're good ...

Thanks .

PS: Any ideas about whether the edge 3 can be replaced by an edge pro bridge ? or an Original Floyd Rose ... Thanks ...

The DiMarzio Breed pickups sound like they'd be a perfect match for you.
As far as replacement trems for the Edge III, go visit the sticky thread on that topic:

Jemsite has a nice search feature for further research...

maybe the D-activator X pickups (they have a bit of a lower treble level).

and the edge pro is the best option for you HOWEVER, it does not come in black so if you want it to match the rest of your hardware, you may need to get some cosmo stuff (tuners, pickup rings, etc.) to go with that trem

@AlaskaBat
@IBZRG1527prestige
Thanx a lot for replying. .

I actually dont mind slight routing .... so the OFR will fit if done well ?? ...i have a luthier friend who does an excellent job..(approx how much does an OFR cost and any ideas wher to get it from ? I'm from india :P ).

D-activator x and breed pickups have smooth clean tones as well ? any sound samples ?? what about the paf joe i heard some tones on youtube i liked ... is there a website where i can get a decent idea about the tone. like sound samples and stuff .

What about SD pickups ?? Bad with basswood ?

Sound samples at dimarzio.com
Just go to that pickup and look to the right of the page for the clips.

Re: RG 370dx Basswood pickups upgrade .

I recently bought a pair of Entwistle HVX pickups, they're very cheap and sound awesome. The bridge pickup went into my GSA60 and the neck pickup I put into my RG370DX. The bridge pup sounds a bit like an SD Screamin' demon with more presence and is more forgiving, while the neck pickup sounds like a very hot Paf. I also bought a Tone Zone for my Rg370DX and have been a little underwhelmed by it. It's not bad but not what I was expecting. The Entwistle's are fantastic though, can't recommend them enough.

Try LonePhantom's "Taming the Tone Zone" mod...

Re: RG 370dx Basswood pickups upgrade .

Oh yeah, I had an SD Screamin' Demon in my basswood Kramer years ago and it was very good, I also have a pair of SD FUll Shred's in my Fernandes Randy Rhoads replica Les Paul, although it's a mahogany guitar I think the Full Shred bridge would sound fantastic in a basswood guitar. The neck pickup is a little muddy though but it might be a lot cleaner in a basswood guitar rather than mahogany guitar. They both sound very good when you use the clean channel though.
