rg350dx wiring hell

hello all!

ok im sure you're tired of these rg350 wiring troubleshooting posts, but Im tired of yelling out m-f to my guitar. anyway...

Im trying to change out the terrible powersound bridge pickup with a dimarzio tone zone. I put the black and white of the dimarzio where the white bridge wire was on the ibanez 5 way. I put the red Dimarzio wire where the red wire was on the 5 way. tied the green and bare and soldered them to the vol pot.
im getting a buzz. wtf?
I tried resoldering my connections and touching the green/bare to other parts of the vol pot surface and with the guitar cord hooked up to an amp to hear if i eliminated the buzz. Did I screw this up somehow with the color codes or geez I dunno. i printed out Dimarzio's and Ibanez wiring diagram but I still havent figured it out.
thanks for any suggestions!

The green/bare to the volume pot sounds fine. The red/white/black should not be used as you listed (if I'm understanding you right). One of those wires should be for the full humbucker sound, and the other two should be for each individual coil of the pickup (so you can split it for single coil sound).

Though, I think you should still get a sound of some sort, even with all three wired to the 5 way. What wiring configuration were you trying to get? Another possibility is that if you spent too long heating solder on the vol pot, it could have ruined it (try messing with the knob, once all the way up give it a harder nudge, etc).

Re: rg350dx wiring hell

hey thanks for your reply.
I dont think i ruined the vol pot...yet. Im using a low power soldering iron.

Im trying to wire it so its the standard Ibanez H/S/H 5-way setup. Some of it sounds correct, like the bridge/middle single split. But the full bridge hums, the middle hums even louder, neck is fine, neck/middle split sound like the tone zone is mixed in somehow. Im sure its all cause the powersounds were 3 wire and Dimarzio was the 4 wire and I couldnt get my brain around it.

oh yeah... the white and black I tied together and soldered them to the same lug (originally the white wire on lug 8 i think) I photographed it before I started it. I also checked all my solder connections for a bad ground including the trem claw in the back. Everything seems clean. I think its something i screwed up on the 5-way.

Re: rg350dx wiring hell

I think you need to swap the white/black and red connections. When looking at the back of the guitar with the neck going to the left, the first 3 connections on the 5-way should be Bridge-red, middle, Neck-red.

Re: rg350dx wiring hell

hey guys thanks for your help.

heres a photo of what it looked like before I started.

the only difference now is the white wire (purple arrow) is now the dimarzio black and white soldered together and the red (orange arrow) is the dimarzio red. the green and bare I soldered together onto the volume pot. i was pretty careful not to burn anything or pull any connection so im thinking somehow Ive messed up this 5 way somehow.

thanks again!

Re: rg350dx wiring hell

I hope I can help more because I have an RG350DX myself and just changed out only the bridge pickup, just like you're doing. The difference is, I used a Bill Lawrence pickup (wired for full humbucking sound). I left the lug where your orange arrow is totally free, and where your purple arrow is I only soldered one wire. I think you need to remove the white/black and leave them soldered together covered with some tape. And put the red wire on the bridge position lug (IF the red wire is the one that gets you your full humbucking sound).

Re: rg350dx wiring hell

I'll have to try that. Will taping off the black and white together still allow the split bridge/middle single-coil sound thats in the 4th position (y'know the 5 way 4 clicks to the right) ?

Its weird though, I downloaded the diagram from Ibanez and it seemed backwards sort-of compared to what my guitar is wired up... which I think has always been stock even though Im the second owner. Its whats been throwing me off about it.

thanks again!

Re: rg350dx wiring hell

You will still get sound in that position with that lug left unsoldered. Should be the full humbucker/middle single sound.

I imagine you can still solder something to that lug if you got experimental with all the coil tapping options, but I never really read up on those ideas enough to try them. Anyways, should work fine.

Re: rg350dx wiring hell

ok... Ill try that. After looking at my photo again and reading your post, I think I finally get (maybe) that the left side of that 5way is the "hots" of the pickups (far left is bridge hot- next is single hot - next is neck hot-) so that should get me started down the right path. Ill have to crack it back open in the morning and try again.

thanks for all your help!
