Question Seymour Duncan wont fit in RG7420! Help!

Hi

Just bought a 7 string SD to fit into the solid body RG7420 but the pickup stand way to proud pushing the strings upwards - can i 'snip' the ends of the screws that stick through a good eighth of an inch under the pickup letting me modify the L shape legs lowering the pick up into the body without altering the sound of the pickup?

Cheers

So the legs are too tall or the screws are too long?

Yep - the routing on the solid body isn't deep enough to let the pickup level to the correct height - i'd only have to snip about 1/16 of an inch of the protuding screws and i could alter the length of the legs a little and re drill suitable holes in the legs to suit the ones in the body, i was just worried in case trimming the ends of the screws would affect the sound even though the screw end are in fresh air.

That's easy.

With a Dremel and the tiny router bit, make the routing a little bit deeper.
If you want, spray a bit of black paint on the bare wood, just to "hide" the bare wood.

On a 7-string, the legs shouldnh't be too deep, but the screws are definitely longer. Part of "traditional" tone on a humbucker is that the screw coil has stretches the magnetic field downward, and elongates it on that coil. Snipping the screws short is actually a preferred modification for some people. They do it on purpose for sonic reasons. If you don't want to snip the poles, you can also just drill 7 holes in the cavity under the poles. That way only the poles would be recessed.

Thumbs up Re: Seymour Duncan wont fit in RG7420! Help!

Good idea - thanks, i was looking at routing the guitar but drilling holes under the poles and bending the L shape legs flat (as the original japanese pick ups were flat to the body) will solve the problem no end!

Cheers
