Spec me some pickups please guys!

Hello =)

I own an Ibanez 170dx, which for the low sum of cash it cost...I think its a fantastic guitar!

I do think the pick ups are the weakest link though and so ive been considering upgrading them for a while now. This is where you come in. I would really appreacite your reccomendations based on the guitar model and the type of music I play on it, this being chilis, guns n roses, nivina, stones etc.. kinda pop/rock/metaly stuff,Although I would rather not strictly limit myself to this style of music with my new pickup choice.

Ive heard good things about EMG and Dizmario. Im leaning towards a set of EMG's because I really like the look of the sealed Humbuckers (pathetic reason I know!)

Id like to replace the bridge/neck humbuckers and the center strat, what would you recoommend?

Many Thanks for your help guys & go easy as you can tell im no guitar tech head!

EDIT: Forgot to say I use a zoom fire 30 modeling amp if that makes any odds

EDIT 2: I would like to stay with passive pu's

Re: Spec me some pickups please guys!

I have 2 GRG170DX`s I bought them for cheapy recording guitars....they are great lil guitars..

In one I have a Fred/PAF Joe about to try the NORTON
the other The BREED set

I recommend the BREED set depending on your amp.... What are you playing through?

Re: Spec me some pickups please guys!

I would suggest something like this:

EMGs, from bridge to neck would be

81, SA, 60A

As far as dimarzio passives, I can only tell you my opinion on what I think are good bridge and neck pickups.

PAF Pros are good. Norton/TZ/Evo2/Mo Joe are great bridge pickups. AN/PAF Joe/Evo are great neck pickups.

For Duncans, I really like anything in the Custom series, especially Custom Custom. Distortion for bridge or neck, JB of course. 59/Jazz/Pearly Gates are still great neck pickups IMO as well.

Or give the new D Activators a shot. I haven't tried them yet, but will soon.

As with all pickup threads, you are going to get every single possible suggestion. Some people like one thing, some like another. The best thing to do is try as many as possible.

Re: Spec me some pickups please guys!

Thanks for your suggestions guys, has certinally pointed me in the right direction!

Its now a equal decision between a breed set (Heard else where they sound good on the 170DX) and the above suggested EMG's.

I know it must be a pain in the ass replying to theses topics because as jaxadam said it really is down to personal prefrence to an extent, but as long as my guitar doesnt sound worse (unlikely lol) I'll be a happy man!

Thanks again

Re: Spec me some pickups please guys!

Dont go emgs, from the styles you listed Id say steves special or super distortion for bridge and air norton neck. EMGs would esspecially sound horrible with that amp.

Re: Spec me some pickups please guys!

hmmm I was going to go for:

EMG H4 (passive 81 equivelent) bridge
EMG-S4 strat
EMG-H3A neck

Untill you said that! More research needed =)

Re: Spec me some pickups please guys!

I think everyone should try emgs somewhere along the line because you either love them or you hate them. I was refering to active emgs tho sorry.

If youre going to go passive then go with dimarzios. The general rule is EMG for active, dimarzio for passive

No no no, don't bother with those...

The H4's aren't that bad (I have them in one of my guitars actually) but I would recommend much more an 81 or 85 bridge, SA middle, and 60A neck as far as EMGs are concerned.

Re: Spec me some pickups please guys!

ok!, as I would like to stay passive Im going to go with dimarzio.

Im thinking (here we go again!):

Air Norton Neck (Seems to be a very popular choice)
Chopper Strat (reccommended buddy for the Air Norton by Dim)
Steves special bridge (because of its clear sound and HiFi like clarerty (apparently!)

My amp can add shed loads of distortion at a touch of a button so think the SS is a better choice than a breed or Super distortion for me.

Sound good? Thanks guys

Next question!

Can some one reccommend a US supplier for these that will ship to the UK? Prices over here are insane!
