Is there a specific type of wire needed to wire a guitar?

I do not know much about wiring a guitar or electronics since i have never wired one, so i was wondering if there is a specific type of wire needed for wiring a guitar. I want to take some wire from an old pedal that doesny work any more

I've heard anywhere from 18-22 is acceptable. other than that, i haven't heard any other "tips", not even something like brand names.

Wire is wire, it all conducts so its all good ( barring obvious things such as big size differences and things like that). It is just a tube of metal with some rubber thrown around it.

So yeah, taking wire from another thing and using it somewhere else shouldn't be an issue. If you're in a pinch and need something fast you can just cut apart old headphones, extension cords, etc.

Re: Is there a specific type of wire needed to wire a guitar?

I'm in a similar situation too. So if I went to this website: maplin.co.uk/Search.aspx?menuno=12278&MenuName=Equipment%20Wire , which would be suitable for wiring to/from pots and a switch?

Thanks,
Ryan.

Re: Is there a specific type of wire needed to wire a guitar?

I've actually done a comparison between Radio Shack clear coated, stranded speaker wire and Allparts "guitar wire" for a rewiring. It made no difference to my ears. The speaker wire is still wired in there.

I used to believe that the thicker the wire used the more receptive the circuit becomes to interference especially on the hot wires from the volume pot.

However the component compartment in this guitar is lined with grounded copper tape....

wire is pertty much wire, i have never noticed a difference but when running longer wires like going to a switch in the les paul i strongly recommend using a shielded wire . shieled means that there is an outer wire that you ground with an inner wire that is a conducter. All pickup wires (99%) have shielded leads. Shielded wire protects against interferance (60s cycle hum) . you can also shield your guitar (if it isn't already shielded) with adheasive backed copper foil.
