Vintage DiMarzios- ID Help

At the guitar shop where I work we found a treasure in an throwaway 70's Hondo Les Paul. While parting out the guitar I was stoked to see the pickups were vintage DiMarzios- the only identifier is a stamped "DIMARZIO PICKUPS USA" (or maybe "DIMARZIO USA"- can't remember). They have braided wire. I'll post pics the next time I change strings in my RT650 where the pups found a new home.

They made the RT what I always suspected it could be, which other DiMarzios and Duncans had failed to do. It's a very bright but balanced piece of alder; one of the loudest and best sounding unplugged electrics I've ever played. I wanted pickups to just PICK UP that great sound, and my problem with DiMarzios usually is that they impart too much of their own sound.

There's no way to tell if the DiMarzios are as old as the guitar, but they're definitely old- any feedback on what they could be?

Just use your imagination

I'll post pics next time I change strings. I'm just wondering if folks knew what kinds DiMarzio was making in the mid-late 70's/early 80's that didn't have a model number on them.

What pole-pieces does it have? Chances are there's a Super Distortion in there.

Re: Vintage DiMarzios- ID Help

All the pole pieces are the same- just smooth and pretty small, no screw heads or anything. Did they make a Super Distortion matched set? That's what the shop owner seems to think.

Whatever they are I could not be more pleased...the perfect vintage sound with a harder rock edge so I can play hard rock without sounding too tame, and blues without sounding too hi-fi.

Not a Super Distortion I'd say, they have Hex Head screws on both bobbins.

Re: Vintage DiMarzios- ID Help

Thanks guys- they look more like the PAF's, and I'd bet that's what they are since they sound much more like a great vintage tone than a super high output pickup.

Rad!
