What makes a good pickup good?

Why are Dimarzio's and Duncans better than what comes stock on most guitars? I'm not arguing that they are better. I know they are but what makes them better? Better quality wire? Better magnets? Better quality control? It just seems like they are prety simple things and I'm wondering where they cut corners on the cheaper ones.

probably quality control and cutting corners on everything. But hey, sometimes I get lucky and find a stock instrument and simply sounds amazing. I found an Ibanez for like $400 for my uncle and it played good but sounded soooooo awsome! the same model right next to it sounded like turd go figure.

the components of the pup has a lot to do with the final tone a pup will produce.
the quality of the magnet, wire, and the precise winding all add up to a top notch pup.
these days believe it or not there are not many "bad" or low quality pups pickups out there.

years ago many were grabage on stock guitars and basses but these days with the advent of the QC of even import pup makers most pups are very high quality

It's hard to say what pups are good. my friend has an Ibanez S450 or something like that and it sounds good at full volume but as soon as you back off the volume (on the guitar) it just sounds....bad. Pickups are also largely personal preference. A good pickup for me might not be a good pickup for you. I have Paf Pros on my guitar right now and most people consider them great pickups, which they are but it's not really my cup of tea so im changing it.

Good pickups taste like beef.

Mediocre pickups taste like chicken.

Bad pickups taste like roadkill.
