What will a pair of Paf Pro's do?

I have an ESP MII with a pair of EMG 81's and I was thinking about getting something new and I was wondering what a pair of Paf Pro's will do with my guitar? What do you think? Is it a good choice for replacing those awful 81's? How do they sound in neck and bridge position? What type of sound do they produce?

Also, can the Paf Pro's be splitted? How do they sound in split mode?

What wood does your guitar have???? (body neck and fretboard)
What Bridge does it have????

It will be easier to help if you answer these questions.

Hi, my guitar has an alder body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard and an original Floyd Rose bridge.

Hi Optimus,

I had two PAF Pro's in my JEM DY77. It has a basswood body. I don't know what the pickups will do in an alder body. However, I think they have a very characteristic sound. You can recognise it easily if you listen to the albums of Steve Vai with David lee Roth. They're medium output, respond very good to picking dynamics... can be aggressive... it's how you play them... but for an agressive sound, I think the Tone Zone is more suited. They're very open. In the bridge I found it a little to bright.. I missed a little more lows and output.. but this is also dependent on your amplifier... my JMP1's distortion is not that high gain... However, I think the sound, also clean, is really beautiful! In the neck, it's great! You can do a lot with the volume.
In short, they're great!

Compared to the EMGs chances are it'll sound a little tired and lifeless...I'd describe Paf Pros with mellow. Try Breed pickups instead. A bit more punch than the Paf Pros and less feisty than Evolutions.

Hello, I listned to 'Eat 'Em & Smile' and I think that Vai's sound is really 'mellow' as one put it. In the neck position and for leads it's very sweet but in the the bridge and for rythm playing it didn't sound any good in my opinion. I also liked the glossy strat rythm sounds Vai got with the Paf Pro in the neck position. I think I'll put a Paf Pro in the neck only.

So, what do you suggest using in the bridge instead? I'm looking for something more open and not so wah filtered. Something crunchy, punchy yet dynamic and pic responsive, preferably being able to clean up well by rolling off the volume. Something unlike the 81's.

Shame on you.
Also unles you like to play your guitar clean, any pickup will be a dissapointment after the 81s

Does it have to be a Dimarzio? Because I always found a Bill Lawrence L-500 to be responsive, dynamic and it responds well to volume changes. just a thought.

why the hell would any1 want to get rid of emg 81s?

you'll be disappointed by any passive pickup after getting used to active ones, i reckon.

unless you play country music or jazz
