Is it just me, or is that "TransScale" thing just a rolling capo?

Nope. It's not just you. It's a rolling capo on an extended-scale neck. (My guess is it's 28 5/8", since they're suggesting "normal" tuning with the capo in its "zero" fret position, and you can roll it down to a "minus two" position or up to the 11th fret.)

Sure is a far cry from the complexity of the TransTrem!

On the plus side, it's an extended scale length

On the downside, each time you move the capo thingy you'll have to re-adjust your playing. (unlike with the Transtrem, where the strings changed pitch and the neck stayed the same)

And after checking http://www.fender.com I've figured out the John5 Telecaster situation: They had two Custom Shop models before (hardtail and Bigsby), and the new one is non-Custom Shop.

And they've also got the Jaguar Baritone Custom (a.k.a. "Bottom Master" ).

Ah, makes sense now. That John 5 Tele sure is an odd bird... the headstock just does not fit.

I do like the look of the new Steinberger Synapse guitars... especially with the flamed top and that nice burst. It reminds me a lot of Ned Steinberger's upright basses. The arched top and contours on the back are a nice touch. And i'm really curious to hear the new EMG piezo setup. Not a bad feature set for a midrange line of instruments. Word is that they'll be delivering around Q4 of this year, and they'll be sold at retail (as opposed to being sold direct via MusicYo).

Preview info is here.

The John 5 Tele is now non-Custom Shop, and thus affordable? BRING IT ON!!! *drolls over keyboard, electrocutes self*

I'm waiting for the Squier version

...And then I'd replace the neck with a Warmoth baritone conversion neck *drool*

(of course, then I'd have to face the irony of putting more money into the mod than the guitar itself was worth )
