^^^Thanks for keeping me honest!!

As far as that Top Gun lick goes, I used the Pod Farm 2 patch I usually use for reviews and it sounds pretty darned close (sans the Chorus). It's just a Tube Screamer into a Plexi, nothing fancy.

Cheers,

Race

That's the riff from Danger Zone, which is Kenny Loggins. He's talking about the Top Gun anthem, which they play near the end of the movie.

Thanks for that anyways, I always kind of wondered what that tone came from

This clip was recorded out of my 10th Anniversary Rockman directly into my laptop using Windows Sound Recorder and a stock Moser STI-T guitar. The quality of the clip isn't great, and I'm not sure I played the lick in the correct key but I think you'll get a good sense that the ROCKMAN tone was in there somewhere.

Interested to hear what everyone thinks.

I heard it was done with a ROCKMAN as well. Sounds like it, too.

Modified plexi and a boss CS-3, according to the man himself:

Found a nice Guitar Pro of it and might take a shot at it myself.

For tone, it looks like it was done by Steve Stevens, so think 80's billy idol type of sound.

I think any sort of singing type of sustain would put you in the ball park.

Need help with "tone" -- Top Gun Anthem ??

Some of you may laugh. But bearing in mind I'm still a beginner, every now and then I need to find some "easy" piece of music to try just to boost the confidence after hitting a wall on something trickier.

So yesterday I thought of the Top Gun anthem to try.

As mentioned, its not a difficult piece to play. But... where I'm scratching my head is with trying to approximate the right guitar tone to sound like the original.

I don't have a lot of gear yet obviously, and I have no idea what was used for the original recording. I was using my RG20th and my Roland Cube 30X amp, which has a few built in effects and amp models. Aside from that I've got a couple pedals (DS-1 and DD-3), which I didn't use.

For some reason I couldn't get anywhere close to a near-sounding tone. (Bizarre since previously I haven't had any trouble getting somewhere in the ballpark for the following tones: Satch, AC/DC, GnR, etc.).

Any suggestions? Thanks.
