Re: CON ALERT - JEMSITE TARGETED

In all respects, buying online can be very safe and very cost effective. It's all a matter of doing your homework and using common sense.

A genuine seller will do whatever it takes (within reason) to satisfy the potential buyer. Take pics of this angle, that angle, etc. Additionally, it wouldn't be too unreasonable to request pics with both the seller's and buyer's id printed onto a piece of paper and included with the pic. This at least ensures that the seller is in possession of the equipment. If it's something on the bay, get them to also include the auction number. I know of at least one person that does this and it's a brilliant idea!

Also, if you're not paying with paypal or credit card (ie wire, etc) where you have additional fraud protection, then make sure you get all the details of the seller; name, address, phone number (land-line), etc. There are plenty of things you can do to ensure that they are who they say they are. Check white page phonebook for example and reference address / phone number with that given to you.

At the end of the day, the golden rule is if it looks too good a deal, then usually that should trigger enough alarm bells to question yourself and think. Other than that, there are plenty of us honest folk that you can deal with reliably.

It's threads like this though, that admittedly present the negative aspects of buying online, yet can also provide a way for us to look at possible situations on the whole and come together to help us all to move forward safely.

He's in the UK, watch out guys, or, play with the jacka$$. I've toyed with him long enough, time to send him packing.
Well looking on domain tools shows that he's based in Lagos, Nigeria: http://whois.domaintools.com/41.155.73.190

I doubt you'd even get a post code looking him up via IP. The best you can do with software is get an area.

However, the phone number is a UK number and I suggest UK members (who have a few minutes to waste) buzz him at all hours. Just remember to prefix with 141 before the number (to withhold your number) so you dial 14107024025622 He's probably got a PAYG phone though so expect it to be discarded any time soon.

More productively though, it may be an idea for Glen / site owner to make a complaint to the police regarding fraudulent activity on the site and hopefully they'll get in touch with the relevant authorities in UK / Nigeria / wherever, who with any luck will make an example of him.

rich is a triple-threat magician; he swirled the guitar, stood in the picture and took it AT THE SAME TIME, and then took the guitar home.

Re: CON ALERT - JEMSITE TARGETED

LMAO, This idiot must think we are all as stupid as him. I cant believe that there are people out there who fall for these con artists. I watched this documentary on TV about people in third world countrys setting up fictitious accounts on internet dating sites and targeting lonely old widows or divorcies. One bloke told this woman he was a major in the US army and he was serving in Iraq, after a couple of weeks of telling her how beautiful and wonderful she was, This con man tells her he has been kidnapped and the kidnappers want a ransom of......... I think it was £40,000 maybe more, he said that the army will not deal with terrorists and bandits so this was why he was asking her..... AND you guessed it.... she paid it.
Eventually the authorities did get hold of the con man and it turned out he had gangs of Nigerians opperating these fake accounts on dating web sites and had stolen a total of nearly £3 million off of these woman. it really does amaze me that people fall for these cons.

Well done Rich for making everyone aware of this low life who wants to con you all out of your hard earned cash!
