Re: How many of us gig?

I used to gig in the mid 80's, got out of it for over 20 years but just started playing bars again. Wish I'd never stopped.

Gig somewhere around once a month, sometimes every few months with a few kids from school.

Finding venues to play where I live (Cairo) is challenging enough, and the methods by which we find them and the sound guys to run the shows are primitive at best, but we get it done. Unfortunately, crowds can be stagnant. We have occasionally been blessed with later gigs at which we get a nice, drunken audience (the best kind), but those are few and far in between.

Nevertheless, excited as hell to move to the US and start college next year.

I used to gig more often when I was younger (it souds funny because now I'm only 25yo), nowadays I don't have band, I also left my hometown (where are all of my friends) and get married last year. And I think I don't miss those days. I prefer to be coach warrior

Re: How many of us gig?

I gig with my band frequently, but it's only dear hobby of mine along with training with my band. I played semi-professional level almost ten years ago (four to five gigs per week), but decided to have nine to five job for stability and went on with my studies. Now days a gig or two in month is enough. There used to be times when I played for free at the beginning of playing history, now days there has to be always money involved

LOL at Deadtunes

I play in an original melodic punk band in Las Vegas. I try to keep shows to no more that 1 per month because attendance suffers if we play any more than that. If I took every gig we were offered, we'd play every week.

This is my logic. Let's say your band has 100 fans. If you play 1 gig in a month it is likely that most of those 100 fans will make it to that show. Whereas if you have two shows in one month, say on opposite sides of town, it is likely that some fans will choose one show and some will choose the other. Effectively, you have split your crowd.

Although venues/promoters don't like it when I turn down a gig, they LOVE it when I bring 100 people to their venue. I couldn't do that if we played every week. Most bands are afraid to tell promoters/venues no. These bands tend to get overworked, underpayed, taken advantage of, and eventually burn out and break up.

I'd rather play once every month to 100 people than once a week to 20 or 25.
It makes the shows bigger and more fun which will keeps people coming out to see us and bringing new friends.

Playing originals in vegas, pay is almost always based upon attendance/ticket sales, so it tends to be more lucrative this way as well. There is less effort to promote 1 show that there is to promote 4. With that said, the pay is pretty crappy compared to what you can make playing covers.

My friends that play in cover bands make $100 to $200 a night each, whereas we'd make that much for the whole band. Safe to say, we don't do it for the money Everyone in my band has a day job.

It is true that the more you gig the better you will get. So you should gig as much as possible, that is good advice.
I'm not saying everyone would agree with my opinion or that it is even correct, but it works for me under my circumstances which are different than yours for sure. This would all be different if we were a touring or cover band or just getting started.

The other thing to remember about playing live, is that everyone makes mistakes! So don't get bothered by them...Just keep going! Chances are no one will notice anyway!

I notice if I don't gig my skills fall apart pretty quickly. Dealing with nerves is something that needs practice in and of itself.
