Re: Please help me ID this RG550

Thanks for the info RGT - I am in the far North burbs. I don't mind learning and doing the setup myself, though I would be interested in a tech recommendation in the NW or N Chicago burbs. I have yet to bring a guitar home from a tech in the last 10 yrs and be happy with it. I miss Sound Post and El Rey from when I was a kid...

All that I can tell for sure in the pics is that the trem angle is off. The tail is too far into the recess which restricts your pull-ups in a major way. You'll see it a million times over that people will set these trems flat to the body the same way you would with an OFR. In fact, the baseplate (body) of the trem should be higher at the tail than it is at the studs.

If you look on the side of the trem baseplate toward the front you'll see a small rectangular piece of metal inserted into the plate. that piece is actually the outside edge of the knife inserts that the trem rides on (the pivots) These rectangles should be parallel to the top of the body. It doesn't matter if you have them higher or lower than the actual top....as long as they're parallel.

BTW....Where in Chicagoland are you?? I'm in the far south suburbs (right next to all the corn,,,,LOL) If I know the general idea of where you are maybe I can set you up with a shop that knows Ibby's, or if your close enough, I can help you out in person.

Re: Please help me ID this RG550

Nice score Randy!! That's a 100% original '93.

550's typically sell between $400 and $600 (sometimes less-rarely more) If you figure that the pickups would have cost you $150........you did well.

The trem is definitely not set up correctly, If you need help getting everything up to "par" just let us know man...............

BTW....Welcome to Jemsite and nice score again!! She's a beauty!!

Re: Please help me ID this RG550

It could be less than a RG550 except it has a ToneZone/Evolution Combo ! Congrats !

I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it

Re: Please help me ID this RG550

Well I picked it up, got it right around $500. Was a little more than I was looking to spend, but it has a Tone Zone in the bridge and Evolution in the neck, so I figured that was worth a little more even with the chipped finish on the tip of the headstock and a couple small scratches/chips on the body. No rust like I see on a lot of these and the fingerboard is clean with no real wear, same with the frets.

Yep--that's a LoPro Edge and the neck looks original.
Can you post a pic of the back of the headstock? That may give us the info we need.

Re: Please help me ID this RG550

Thanks for the input, I just uploaded the pictures I got from the seller. Going to do some homework on the Lo Pro, but I am interested in opinions. I would ass-u-me that this is not the preferred trem style given it only lasted a couple years, but I will read up to see what folks have to say.

As far as the neck goes, if the serial number and model are on there it would seem like it is original or a direct replacement, may just be the guys take on the neck???

Re: Please help me ID this RG550

Pics would help. It is a 1993 model and trem would be Lo Pro Edge. The beefy neck would not be consistent with it being original as '93 models had the very thin Wizard neck:

Please help me ID this RG550

I am looking at picking this RG550 up, but I am having a hard time figuring out the year and which trem and neck it has.

1. The serial is F3065XX - does this mean it is a June 1993 model?

2. The current owner thought the bridge might be a replacement because, "The bridge feels very flush like the newer Ibanez bridges. All my others still had a nice bridge but they were not as flat on your palm. The screws to change the strings were on the very back of the bridge where this one is more in the middle behind the saddle." Thinking this may be the Lo Pro which is consistent with 1993 from what I have read.

3. He also said the neck was "beefier" than other RG550's he has owned, don't know if that points to a replacement, the neck looks really clean.

Any help would be appreciated. I own a few older Ibanez LP's/RS and an S, but this would be my first RG550.

**edit - added pix***

Thanks
