Re: Whats up with Gibson?

Most of the Gibsons I've played have been pretty good actually, and I've even been tempted to buy one or two. Generally when I have A'B'd high end copies next to Gibsons They haven't really come all that close.

Having said that I own a Korean made Maison LP from the 80's and it sits on a par with some of the best Gibsons I've played.

I don't really have a point here.

That's mahogany. You have to realize that mahogany is a broad term for many similar species of tree that grow on multiple continents. A lot of mahogany these days is coming out of Africa. There are differences in color between the well known South American and the newer to the scene African mahogany species. However, that grain is prototypical mahogany with its dead straight nature and few imperfections. Heck of a piece of wood there though.

Re: Whats up with Gibson?

I doubt any company is very consistent with their guitars nowadays. Gibson is definitely cutting corners because their wood in being taken in random searches. I heard somewhere that they may even be making guitars in the Epiphone factory and selling it as American. That scheme sounds ridiculous to me, but Gibson is definitely not as consistent as it used to be. If a guy is making a good copy for a lot less then you should go for it a name is just a name in the end.

That doesn't make any sense. Why is it the shops fault that gibson can't make a consistent product?

There's a big difference between "This company makes guitars wrong a lot of the time, and right some of the time", and "This company's guitars are victims of poor store setups".

We aren't idiots. We're guitar players. I'm confident we can tell the difference.

This week got an MIK Epi goth explorer as part of a trade. Every site I looked at said in the specs that it has a mahogony body and neck. I took a sander to it yesterday,, going for a natural look,, as soon as the paint started to come off I could tell it was not mahogony. Looks like alder or something. Its a nice piece of lumber but not what I was expecting. The neck is mahogony. Its still looks sweet and plays lots better than I anticipated. I can post pics when I get home if you all are interested.
Yeah,post pics.

Re: Whats up with Gibson?

Binding nibs have been around forever and are a high end feature.

The current Gibson still sucks, I have a couple 60's era ones that are great though.

Word is that Harry runs the place like a prison. Employees walk on eggshells worried about getting fired for no reason. My guess, every now and then a pissed off employee sticks it to the man by jacking a guitar up.

Meanwhile my friend's Epiphone was never haunted, you'd think at Gibson's price point they would do exorcisms on all the guitars at the factory
Once again this is one of them post where i wish jemsite had signatures

Re: Whats up with Gibson?

I've been researching a Gibson Budokan Ace Frehley model recently and have seen a ton of customer complaints stemming from Gibson's QC issues. I'm seriously rethinking my decision of buying one.
