Re: Another please help identify thread

I have a question regarding the maple fingerboard - never had one before. I cleaned this one up with a damp washrag for starters, and the dark spots on the board around the first few frets are due to dirt getting into the actual wood - the finish is worn off in spots. My question is, is there anything I can do for that, and should I do anything for that? Thanks.

Thank you, I will look into those then.

If you want crunch and clarity for metal you definitely want DiMarzio Dominions. These pickups seriously rock. My favorites.

Ha, thanks. Yeah I got in a discussion once about tone from wood, and I agreed to stay ignorant. I will trust others because I don't have the time or means to try everything for myself. And I will probably buy from Amazon, so returns aren't an issue. Thanks for the help!

Re: Another please help identify thread

Almost forgot; you may get a lot of guff from people on here insisting that the wood has nothing to do with your tone.
I've read many of the arguments and listened with my own ears.
My boyfriends Stratocaster is made of alder, my RG is made of basswood.
With the same brand of stings and picks, acoustically they sound TOTALLY different, and knowing what I know about physics and electronics, I'm certain that if they both had the same pickups, hardware, etc. that difference would transfer to the amp. Maybe not as much, but I just can't see how it couldn't.
However; again knowing what I know about physics; the same wood can have different density and grain, so even from the same tree two pieces of wood can sound totally different.
But; like my father always says; "Opinions are like butt-holes: everyone has them and they are often full of crap."
(It wouldn't let me put what he really says, so I paraphrased. )

Re: Another please help identify thread

The RG1550 I just got has a set of Evolutions in it (original neck) and I think they sound great. I'm not much into metal though, so when I do overdrive the amp it's not by a lot so... as they say, YMMV.
You'll get a lot of this, "Listen to samples, go to the music store and try to play guitars with the pickups you're interested in. The only way is to hear it for yourself."
Also, I think Dimarzio has a return policy, so if you don't like it/them you can exchange it/them.

Re: Another please help identify thread

Thanks... I guess! No, I hear you, Tone Zones are good... they are all marketed to sound like they are all awesome, but it's tough to figure it out without some trial and error. I suppose I could buy something and if I didn't like them I could put them in some other old beater I have lying around...

BTW the Bartolinis in the 7 string are solid, solid, solid. I love them. I'm not even sure they still make them.

Re: Another please help identify thread

The age ol' question....phantom will probably chime in here. Basswood has alot of options, but to my ears bridge evo or dimebag are too bright in basswood, but sound excellent in mahogany. I don't have experience with the EVH, but I imagine it would give a nice warm sound. I am partial to the typical tone zone for a bridge, maybe a fred or mo' joe, crunchlab. So many choices...lol. Good neck p/u's paf pro, paf joe, liquifire. Heck even the f2-f4 combo sounds real nice in basswood. A long long time ago a friend of mine had a bartolini in the neck of a 550 and I remember it being a fantastic clean/jazz/jazz fusion p/u.

Re: Another please help identify thread

Okay I have a question, because I don't have the experience. What pickups do I put in this thing? Metal, harmonics, deep clean tones - crunch with clarity is what I am after.

For many years my only guitar has been a 1983 Squier. I put SD Live Wires in it a year after I bought it new, and they've been in there since. In 1998 I bought a new 7620, and I put Bartolinis in it. My third guitar came only a few years ago. I don't know what a PAF Pro or an Evo sounds like, or a SD SH13 Dimebag, or the EVH Frankenstein... I would like to hear what you guys think. Thanks.

Re: Another please help identify thread

All great news. I appreciate your guys' input. And Fanatic, I swear the pics make it look a lot nicer than I think it really does in person! But, the more I read about the 550's, the more I am glad I got it. He knew it was rough. The first time I looked at it, I asked if he would take $175. He said yes, and then I said I would have to think about it. I wasn't sure... I called him back and he said he would take $155, and I figured then that I needed to do it. You guys make me glad I did, as I realize more and more just how nice these guitars are/can be! Thanks all...

Sweet guitar and sweet deal! As Ryc says, the crack is nothing to worry about and is an easy fix.

Re: Another please help identify thread

Damn man, You kicked my butt for "cheap guitar of the month" We paid about the same price, but your 550 is way nicer than the 760 I bought. I agree that the pocket crack is probably into the wood. I also agree that it probably won't cause a single issue for a while. If/when it does, fix it then. It's a simple, fast, and cheap fix to do.

Again congrats on the 550........... I'd buy 10 of them at that price!!

Re: Another please help identify thread

That's good to hear. I'll get this thing taken apart and cleaned up, and maybe post some more pics if it looks better. But, I really do want to know what you guys use to clean trems...

Re: Another please help identify thread

That's a great deal for $155. Not in that bad condition either, has a bit of mojo. Loads of my Ibanez have similar neck pocket cracks, never given me any trouble.

Re: Another please help identify thread

Thanks. I'm likin' it. And actually thinking about it, wondering what a little crack like that would turn into, or how it would affect things as they are. I mean, I'm not gonna be torquing on the neck... I'll take it apart later and look anyway though.
