Re: Chibanez?

If one is given to you, the first thing to do is replace the pickups and wiring. Then get some new tuners, strap pins and pickguard (if it uses one). Next replace the neck and body and any other hardware not yet replaced. Finally, smelt or burn the original parts.

Re: Chibanez?

My 2 cents worth..

Not only do I love guitars, especially Ibanez guitars, but I love Knives...

I'm a Custom Knife Maker - 25 years now.

There are many knife makers who have been finding their product being copied by the Chinese to the point where even they have a hard time telling them apart.

I fully understand our consumer relationship with China, but when unscrupulous manufacturers produce something without permission
It's Wrong!!!
It undermines the credibility of said Brand...

If you're one of those who buy one of these pieces of $hit ... well then , a Plague of Locusts upon you !!

Look what's happening on Ebay with this crap... you're one of those buying this stuff , well you're contributing to the problem!

"But I just bought 1 little bitty guitar, I'm not hurting anything!"..
Go ahead , Lie to yourself.. you're the problem...

I would buy a chibson. If that makes me a horrible person, then so be it. That silverburst looks amazing.

But rarely some real Gibsons get this issue since wood around logo expands or shrinks at different rate than veneer over rest of headstock. In both cases these guitars are very good and pretty much on par with Les Paul Custom I used to have.

I don't think it's moral to buy them but drummer really didn't know and some fakes fool even some of the most careful buyers.

All the information on what features, serials, electronics are real is simply a BLUEPRINT which can direct the fake manufacturers how to build a great fake. It's a guitar, not an F-16, so quite a few fakers can get the money and tooling to make great fakes.

Yeah, it seems like they are doin a pretty good job with those Chibsons.

Come to think of it, I actually have seen some Chibanez Jem, and it was real junk. But that was a long time ago, they might have gotten better at making Chibanezes as well.

Have not seen any of the Ibanezes though.

If it is good from a moral point of view however, is another question.

Re: Chibanez?

As an avid fan of early nineties Ibanez' I wouldn't want a replica/fake/copy and actually have never seen one in real life, so I can't comment on those.

What I do have is a replica/fake/copy Gibson Silverburst LP. I found it on C'list and decided to go for it. I have several friends who own real Gibson LP's (including Rick Musallem) and they have commented that, although it's OBVIOUSLY not the real thing, it's a pretty decent guitar and certainly worth more than the similarly priced Epiphone versions. I also showed it to Bill Kelliher of Mastodon who was interested in the nut (brass with crossheaded adjustable string heads).

I have taken the thing apart to try to find it's original place of manufacture but cannot find a single clue. I'd love to find out more about it!

It has the bumblebee type capacitors in the tone pots, the pick-ups sound tremendous, has a set neck and the action is the one of the lowest I own. It's quite a different beast to an Ibanez RG style guitar but it's still a real pleasure to play. The drummer/guitarist/singer from our show is using it right now to lay down some new tracks (Nick D'Virgilio). I've gigged with it and would again, the guitar is built like a tank.

So to conclude, I'm not generally a fan of fakes and I do not condone the makers of them, but if you take a guitar and try it out non-judgementally you might find there are a few out there that really provide bang for your buck.

My guess is that someone took the time to make this silverburst as best they could since real ones are prohibitively expensive. Just like some people make their own Jems as best they can for the same reason. However, if it IS a mass produced chinese knockoff they did a stunning job!

I want to be clear that I would support people who make one-offs, or replicas due to the love of that type of guitar, as many people do here on Jemsite. I do not support manufacturers of guitars designed to rip people off or deceive people. I know this last statement is contradictory since I own this LP, but I hope you get my point.

Cheers!
