im having the same problem with lo-trs trem. I only have 3 springs, and will need two more!! Dont know what Ive got myself into. The Zakk strings are a good idea, but it is a headache for set up.

ok here we go, I set my Jem7dbk with GHS Zakk Wylde 10-60s and drop tuned a full step. It felt better than a les paul and of course sounded a whole lot better too. But after playing it for a while and playing my 7VWH I decieded to change back to the exl110s. The set up for the 10-60s was a nightmare. 5 springs all the way into the body and I broke my trem bar off trying to do a flutter. Anyway all is better and back to "normal"
Cool strings, great sound not for anything that you want to "use"

|sniperfrommars1||11's are kind of the point that things start getting iffy. They will work and require a setup and under normal circumstances you shouldnt have any problems (when properly setup). So just be careful. Why use 11's anyway they DONT sound better than 10's|

I regularly use four springs on my JEMs anyway. I remove on of the spring retainer screws (bass side) and that's the hole I used to place a 4th spring. I then slide the retainer back into position. I've been doing this for years and it works well.

if you bend the tip of the spring back a little it won't fall out. More tension=less flutter, whether it's from the back (springs) or the front (higher gauge strings).
regarding the session and that producer, why didn't you just use one of his guitars?
I used 11s on my RG for years. Went thru 2 necks on that guitar - whether it was because of the strings or the sanded neck, i don't know...
But on a GMC, i wouldn't want to find out. I have a Strat with 11s. My Ibanez's get 10s now. Different tools for different jobs.

|sniperfrommars1||Try your basic fender springs But you can remove the retainer bar. Rich says he doesnt use it at all on his players so that makes it useless. But Ive VERY RARELY, seen the springs pop off. Not that it happens often or anything.|

You'd think any producer worth his pay would have enough tools at his disposal (mics, preamps, compressors, EQ, etc... not to mention a good engineer) to tweak your tone to whatever he wants to hear.
Sounds like a dork to me.
Let him use his tools and you use yours.

Ok, sorry to revive this but I'd rather not create a new thread.
I WANT to use 11's on my GMC but I can't get the bridge to balance. You also can't add more springs to a Lo-Pro as far as I can tell because the retainer bar on the inertia block uses the other two holes for it's screws. I've tightened up the claw as far as it can go but still no good. Is there any way to get stronger springs? maybe mine have just gone soft cuz they've been in there since '92

Thanks Guys... I went back to my .010-.046 guage and told the producer I wasn't comfortable with the .011's. He was ok about it and the recording went well!

Yeah! I always felt it should be the producer's job to take the atrists' sound and work with it rather than changing it all together. I hate that. The band is "telling the story" not the producer. A good producer is resourceful and will work with what they have. If you are looking to have your music and freedom of expression messed with, consider turning your music into poppy-dance remix, sterile-rhythm stuff, then contract Mr. Shania Twain.
If you are happy with your tone-stick with it. A good producer should know how to get that sound on tape (or disc).

...another vote for telling the Producer to cram it with Walnuts. You're not asking him to go into a totally foreign studio to do work so why should he expect you to change something as drastic as a string guage for recording.
If that puts you in a tough situation then I'd just lie to him and tell him that you had it set up with 11's and keep your 10's on there. The odds that he's going to know gauge by feel isn't terribly likely. And if he can...well...tough...he can deal with it.
