My decision is so hard because 1. I love sharktooth inlays and I love the condition of the S but 2. that 540R needs a home, Supposedly, it has been sitting in Ochanomizu collecting dust for ages. I think with even a few dings on it, it needs to be part of the guitar rescue program.

Re: 540S vs 540R

Just curious but how rare is a Purple Neon 540S? 1990 model.

EDIT:

I just realized the S is also 22 frets. This makes the decision harder

The color on this looks fantastic in person, and you can't go wrong with an original Edge trem. Looks to be in very good condition as well...
That's where I'm leaning at the moment. Also, I have also bought 2 guitars from that store before (my 550CA and 560PN) and it's local. However, I WILL be in Tokyo in December and knowing Ishi, that Radius will probably still be there. I can try it out again if I want to.

I have been gassing for an S after playing a 5470 prestige a couple months ago, but prestige S are so expensive. This Golden era S would be great for me, but I need to go try it out. Will do that Sunday. If I like it I just may grab it on the spot

If I put it on my CC, I'll get owned on interest but if it's my only option, then that's my only option

maybe what you say is true for 1992, but not '90-'91. Too bad ibanez wiki doesn't break down the colors for HSS, HSH vs HH. i'll have to look at the old catalogs to see if there is more info. Either way those burst colors are sick and most that do pop up are 1987's. I have one of each bb and rb and those are '87s
Crap I meant to write "in Japan" where the OP is located, which would have made my comment make more sense. In Japan the HH model was offered in several solid colors but the HSS was mostly offered in the bursts.

In the US the bursts were pretty much an '87 thing.

'90 Japan catalog:

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary_...t_id=28&now=10

'91 Japan catalog

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary_...t_id=27&now=13

'92 Japan catalog

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary_...at_id=25&now=5

'93

http://www.ibanez.co.jp/anniversary_...at_id=24&now=1

I don't believe the guitar was sold after 93, giving way to the JS. The '93 US market LTD model was really unique in that it had AANJ and a Wizard neck (basically a 540S neck since they never made an AANJ Ultra neck).

I like the sharktooth inlays personally. My only concern with the 540Rs 22 frets. So used to 24 that it would need some getting used to

Re: 540S vs 540R

I like the color of the 540R better... plus I'm a fan of the fatter neck profile. BUT... I recently played an '89 540S and it might be the best feeling guitar I even played. Tough decision... but either way you'll end up with a fantastic guitar.

Just FYI, Ishibashi DOES have a Redburst 540R also, but that blue one in Ochanomizu has been sitting there for ages and deserves a good home

My friend is going to sell me his Hughes and Kettner Edition blue 60w for pretty cheap. Tried the 30w version and it sounded great, just needs a little depth at higher volume, which is where stuff like a BB preamp or some other warm booster will cover Could just use my 9/9 and that will solve everything

That's what one the things I like and dislike about it. I have a 560PN already so I dont know if I really want another PN guitar. OTOH, it's just so gorgeous

What you guys are missing is the key difference between these two guitars:

Radius - Ultra neck

Saber - Wizard neck

The Ultra neck is much fatter and a tiny bit narrower at the nut (42 mm). Personally I'd go for the Radius as I prefer that neck.
Well I know about the necks and when I tried the Radius I had no issues with it. When I think about it now, it's similar to the thin neck profile of my JB (slightly different shape but thickness is similar). The neck issue isn't really a big deal as I love the ultra wizard.
