Re: RG3250 Orange vs RG550Mxx RFR

The 87 serial number coming out in 88 sounds most likely because i bought it after 87. And i was so proud of my brand new orange popsicle .then i went to see a fellow shredder buddy's band play two weeks later and there he was up there with the same one! dammit. but that's ok i've still never seen another one in person other than his and mine even after 25 years. AND we both still have em, in the same town no less!
Soon after when i bought the RFR one as a back up, i really wasn't extremely fond of the intense neon flare color, it kinda hurt my eyes and the tone was different, i couldn't roll back the volume knob and still get a warm mellow semi distorted bluesy tone like the orange one, it was very thin so i sold it and bought a low gear set for the hot rod, heheheh. that's ok i got a blue 550 in 90 as well so at least i still have the two. And play them regularly.
This is cool sharing info and talkin bout the old days , thanks!

It's hard to tell from your picture, but I'd say it's either Carotene Orange or Five Alarm Red. I think it's more likely to be CO as it was offered in '88 on several guitars including the RG560...and early '88 models would have an '87 serial number. Even though Ibanez supposedly did not offer the 550 in CO it wouldn't be the first time a one-off guitar like this surfaced. In fact i think other CO 550's have surfaced in the past.

The other possibility (but probably less likely) is Five Alarm Red. That color was offered in '89 which is why i think it is less likely to be the case. i did however have an '88 model 540 Power that was painted that color, and there's also one reverb right now. The only '87 FA Red guitar i've seen is a prototype of an '89 model guitar that was built in '87. So I suppose it's possible, but i think more likely you have a CO guitar.

I realize fading may be a factor, but if your guitar is a bright neon orange color (or more of a creamsicle color i suppose if it's faded) then your guitar is CO. If it's more of a redish/orange neon it's Five Alarm Red (see my earlier post in this thread...the 540p). Also, since you have a RFR to compare it to, FA red is kinda similar to RFR just more orangy than the pink....whereas CO is really nothing like RFR at all.

Here's a picture of my '88 CO RG560 if this helps you.

Your best bet is to upload to an image hosting service and imbed the image in your post

Yeah, I spent some time looking for a CO 550 myself, only to find most of the "orange" 550s I'd seen were actually RFRs that had faded a little and/or blown out the flash. I don't think they exist, and certainly the 560s look WAY more "orange" than even the blown out 550s.

It's possible it was a one-off/proto batch or something, but I don't think it was ever a production run - RG550COs never made the 87 catalog.

Re: RG3250 Orange vs RG550Mxx RFR

I played a RG3250 at Guitar Center, thought it was pretty cool. Went back a couple times and wanted to play it again, but both times someone else was playing it. Third time I went back it was gone. gl ^ ^

Looking at the location of course your fixated with Orange!

Just about my favourite colour for guitars! Always wanted the RG3550 ROM which I tried tracking down but was unable to obtain sadly (had to do a custom job).

I cant see the trem being an issue really with the RG3250 personally, but its all down to what you like.

If you like & are comfortable with the edge then why change? Don't fix what's not broken as they say.

I did notice recently an orange RG3250 going quite cheap (at the time) located in Germany, must admit I was quite tempted but I am considering downsizing so opted out.

Good luck though.

There's nothing wrong with the EZ trem. It works fine and does the job. The ZPS is nice for some extra tension as well. My only gripe is the fine tuners but other than that, it's a great trem.
