I will replace the pups in any case - I'm not a lover of V1 and V2 pickups on Japanese S470 (the seller says it's 440 though), or modern INFs or Quantums on Indos

Re: S 440 Japan or new S 520

The 1994 model in your picture is actually an MIJ S470, not a 440S. It has a Lo-TRS trem which can be a very good bridge. It has an original wizard neck that has some small, but significant differences to the WizardIII on the S520. The WizIII is 2mm wider at the heel, roughly 1-2mm thicker the entire length, and has 24 frets as compared to the 22 frets of the MIJ Wizard. The WizIII fretboard has a rounder 400mm radius as compared to the flatter 430mm on the Wizard. The WizIII is also a 3-piece maple neck without a scarf joint. In comparison, the original wizard on the S470 is a 1-piece maple neck WITH a scarf joint. This makes it inherently less stable than the WizIII. Pretty much every single original wizard I've had or worked on has had scarf joint shrinkage.....this one will too. The WizIII necks DO have some problems as well, including porly finished frets/fret ends, relief in less than optimal placement on the neck, and truss rods that are less beefy than the MIJ rod.

In terms of quality, I would say these guitars are roughly equal. IMO, it all comes down to the neck. I would choose the S520, but I would expect to make pickup changes AND know that it will probably need some fret work to be considered "finished".

It sounds like you are leaning towards the 520 with 24 frets and 2 humbuckers - if those features are important to you over the 22 fret HSH MIJ model then you need to go with what feels right for you. But I'm pretty sure just about anyone on this site would recommend the MIJ model over the Indo model because of the higher MIJ quality...but again you need to go with what feels right for you.

The 520 is just the same as listed as at the website: ibanez.com/products/images/eg2015/S520_BBS_1P_02.png
I'm not familiar with that 440 model. Do you have a close up of the bridge? It looks like a TRS to me but I can't really tell. If it's a lo-pro edge I would buy it, otherwise I would pass and wait for an s540.

Get the MIJ S and don't worry about dings (as I assume at this age there are).

And according to the website, the 520 has Edge-Zero II tremolo bridge

Are you talking about the 440s from 1991?

I would pass on the MII for sure, and if this is the model you're referring to I would pass on it as well and wait for an s540, or any model with an edge/lo-pro + wizard neck.

Re: S 440 Japan or new S 520

I've been playing guitar for about 30 years (mostly Strats and some RG's) and never owned a S series guitar until a few years ago and now I own 3 of them because I love them....so comfortable and play great! I thought they wouldn't sound as good because of the lighter body / less mass but all 3 of my S guitars sound very nice are more resonant than I thought they would be. All 3 of my S guitars are made in Japan (I have 6 Ibanez guitars and they are all made in Japan). I used to own an Ibanez S470DXQM, which was a nice looking guitar but the quality did not compare to the MIJ models so I sold it and have since bought 3 S series guitars that were all used MIJ models.

So I would highly recommend going with the older MIJ guitar - provided it is in decent condition. The Indo and Korean models are not bad guitars but definitely not as nice as the MIJ models, in my opinion. I think it would be well worth spending the extra money to buy the made in Japan model. Plus the MIJ guitars hold their value better.

Let us know what you buy and how you like it...

S 440 Japan or new S 520

Hi floks,

Wanna try the S series guitar, which I have not tried before, hence I'm not going to spent much money on that.

Two guys in my neighbourhood are selling S's, one is 1994 440 model, made in Japan, the other is modern (2015 maybe), made in Indonesia. The 440 costs about 350 dollars, the 520 - 200 dollars.

I've never tried modern Indonesian Ibanez guitars, own the 1987 RG540 and 1993 RT412 12 string, earlier I had the 1996 Universe.

Who has had a chance to compare these two models, or maybe tried/owned the current 520 model? I know that Japanese guitars are very high in terms of quality, but what about modern Indonesians? Anyway, 440 does not seem to be a hi-end model.

The modern 520 has look and specs (24 frets, two humbuckers) I love more, while Japanese 440 has 22 frets and HSH combo.

Any ideas?
