I don't recall ever reading it, but I think the general consensus was that Ibanez redesigned their entire lineup in 1987 and the Roadstar just "became" the RG. I remember thinking "Oh, they're calling them RGs now" back in the late 80s...

I think it's a fair assumption.

mike777 BTW, wht exactly does RG stand for. I always thought it would probably be "Roadstar Guitar." Does anyone here no for sure? I've always been curious about that.

dex Actually he was working for the Third Reich on a popular, cheap yet reliable car that most people will be able to afford and that will be easy to fix. It was called "The People's Car".
He was like a goverment contractor.

After the war he was in a French prison, but the French told him they would let him go if he helped them built a popular, cheap yet reliable car that most people will be able to afford and that will be easy to fix.
He did it and it was called Renault 4CV.

After helping the French, his family paid up and he was released and he helped a bit (but only a little bit) in the conception of the first Porsche 356.
It was actually his son Dr Ferry Porsche that registered Porsche Engenering Ltd and that put in most of the work to transform a stock Beetle into a 356.

VW was registered as a goverment holding company and later was privatized and has absolutely nothing to do with the Porsche family.
Porsche has nothing to do with VW either, appart from the fact that Dr Ferdinand Piech - the son of Ferry Porsche's sister was runing them for a bit. As far as i'm aware he's running Audi now and is still working for VW Group.

FYI the guy that spawned the Beetle, Dr Ferdinand Porche died in 1952 and at the time there were only 52 Porsche 356 produced and his son had yet to find ANY comercial success.

Back to the JEM now then..........

sorry....just a little information

ferdinand PORSCHE was working for VW in 38, and he designed the first beetle, after he created his own brand..PORSCHE....

It s why the first 911 (and 914), as exactly the same chassis and engine as the beetle

the jem are great !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Knightmeir My 320 is like playing a baseball bat with another piece of wood spraypainted blue at the end with some strings attached. The quality is CRAP compared to my Jems.

littlegreenman Wow, for a thread that had nothing to talk about (hehehe glen) LOL, it sure is quickly growing.

Bottom line, if you like the RG and wanna mod it, do it, if you like the Jem buy it, and the real high end RG's and J customs and stuff cost the same as the Jems or close to it, so really, it's a moot point now.

I just say, Jems forever!!!!!!!!!

AlexBHome Only public response I'll make off topic before I discuss it privately for clarity's sake:

Porsche doesn't make VWs, and vice versa is true as well... VW is the company that subsidized and assisted Porsche in building his first models, which really were high powered versions of the VW used for racing. VW also helped get Porsche out of a Nazi prison by hiring him for a period of time.

PerKr about this "where did the RG come from" discussion...

I have the option of getting a used Ibanez guitar that may or may not be an RG. the thing that makes me question it is the 22 fret neck. I havenīt heard of any 22-fret RGs since the introduction of the JEM. it also has a FR2.
is this the older brother of the RG???

and porsche doesnīt make VW as far as I know. with the exception of maybe a few special models.

jemsite you're barking up the wrong tree. they even changed the roadstar name to RG.

sniperfrommars1 Thats a premeire guitar built by steve when his gear was stolen. Green meanie and those guitars are basically alot like the jem, but the subtle refinements of the jem make it the big cahuna

jono I've always thought the JEM's overall body shape was incredibly similar to the shape of this guitar




Mainly it's the shaved down lower horn and deep set neck as found on the JEM, but still I'd wager that this guitar has a lot of base pairs in the JEM's proverbial genome.

sniperfrommars1 Not one design released before the jem/rg looked exactly like the jem/rg. At least not to my knowledge. Regardless of whether or not they were taken from the roadstar line it still goes to stand. Its obvious to me looking at the cutaways on green meanie and the jems that they came from a similar source. I mean we know its roughly a roadstar derived shape. But they are still a new body design.
