I've been quite happy with 10-52 in drop C. they don't feel too different in tension to 9-42 in standard E.

I use 11s for a whole step down. I think it's a 52 on the low string, with a 56 to drop that a step further.

I don't think string thickness should be as much of an issue as string tension.

String gauge for CGCFAD ???

Hey there, what string gauge would you recommend for full step down ?

Also, is it normal to have hand pain with playing with thicker strings ?
