^^ Yes, it seems to have been the case for the early years. I have two 1986 guitars and both have black blocks, don't know when they stopped doing it. The block is painted, fwiw, the alloy itself is not black.

Killer example of a 540P there!

The people who own these guitars for 20+ years and keep them in perfect condition are angels. I'm as old as this guitar but in much worse condition haha

Also, random.. but I've never seen a black sustain block for the trem. Did Gotoh/Ibanez paint them back in the day?

here's a pic of me back in 87 with one of my 540p's (jr high school talent show, we played Metallica:Sanitarium) .. i'm the original owner. :-)

i didnt realize this was the main difference between 87 and 88 guitars. i guess i have 3 87's. :-)

I think thats a PII ? All of my 540 P's have two knobs and the switches are underneath them

Always wanted one of these ever since the Ibanez Racer X ads in Guitar Player back in 1988! Stumbled over one on eBay and couldn't hit "BIN" fast enough!

Arrived today and wow what a stunner, and in great shape for a 32 year old guitar.











Came perfectly set up with fresh strings and plays beautifully.

Need to load down the neck pickup a bit, too bright with a 500k volume and no tone control, but that's an easy fix.


Could not be happier!
