Re: serial number year

Rich's site has a section detailing how to date guitars, go to the link up top (ibanezrules.com) and read his article, its very thorough.

Re: serial number year

I have a JEM77FP with the serial number: 891505. Will this mean it was manufactured in 1989? Or would it likely have been manufactured in 1988? I have owned it for 12 years. She is a beauty.

Rich that's would be 40K range and not 34k, should be ebony.

JJT I am in the same situation. I really wanted to order my guitar from Rich, but unfortunately he informed me that he would not be getting any new JEM7VWHs with an ebony fretboard. So as a last resort before conceding to rosewood, I asked Guitar Center to call me when a 7VWH comes in, hoping that they would possibly get shipped "old" stock.

Well, one came in which I am 95% sure has an ebony fretboard. The grain is very tight like ebony, and looks nothing like the rosewood in the posted pictures, or on the JEMVSBL for that matter. However, the color is not jet black; I would say it has a dark brown hue, which has me confused, because rosewood is a dark brown. The serial # is F0340312, which seems like it is in the ebony serial # range, as Rich had mentioned the rosewood models he received were in the 45K range.

My question is whether or not the 7VWH fretboards with ebony are jet black, or more of a dark brownish hue? Does anyone know if serial numbers in the 34K range are 2003 models? Rich, can you shed any of your wisdom here?
