Here is the scoop on the 220 EX (from Ibanez and GC):

The 220 EX is based off the SA160, but with some nice touches, tweaks and QMT. I can't see how Ibanez or GC can be making money on the guitar.

Mahogony body with quilted maple top
Neck is AH3 pickup
Bridge is AH4 pickup
Rosewood FB
Maple neck

I have the guitar and I love it. I spent over 9 months trying guitars in the $1500 range and down. Strats, PRSs, Teles, Schecters, etc. Against my own prejudice of not liking Ibanezes, I tried the guitar. Wow! Maybe it was just a "special" guitar that has that "mojo", but I HAD to have it. I was playing through a Hot Rod deVille on the lead channel with the fat switch on, bridge pickup and tone control rolled back = instant Santana. Went to clean and tried all the pickup positions and rolling back the volume on the pickups and loved all but the bridge pickup alone-it needed some tweaking.

I love the pickups, especially the neck in position 1 and the two pickups in position 4 (As simlar to a strat bridge and middle pickup combo as you can get. The bridge pickup is quite bright, but I am a single coil fan usually. I may replace it, but I am in no hurry.

The trem is quite good for reasonable effects. I does not have the range to do Floyd Rose-type bombs. Stays in tune better than a Strat trem, from my experience.

Fit and finish were top shelf. You could tell that the builders and those that did the set up CARED.

The guitar is VERY versatile: Blues to hard rock to prog to jazz are easily accessible with excellent tone for each genre. (Using Yamaha DG stomp). That said, it CANNOT replace a Strat or a Tele. But I feel I don't need another HH guitar.

ace_of_spadezz I do know some about the woods. mahogony body with maple top. mahongy neck with rosewood fretboard i believe. I'm not really sure on the pickups i think the guy at guitar center said they were hot rods er somthing not sure on that. I do know they sound good and grungey through my marsall.

Two hands31 Ok, but it's still a 2003 model. The pickups are cheap, made by Ibanez. Not sure about the woods involved or anything though.

ace_of_spadezz O yea and the pickups acutally have metal pickup rings. but i agree they do look kind of like cream in the first picture.

ace_of_spadezz Well it may be 2003 but they have only had it on sale this month so i dunno. I have seen a review on it from when it was made in the past like the last time guitar center had a anniversary. Regarding the tint , It is the same guitar belive me i don't have two er anything. you may be able to find it at a guitar center close to you but you may not find it there, there are only two guitars for every guitar center, one ruby red and the other grey transpernt. If you have a 40th aniversary magizine it is on page 32. You can also find it on this website------ - got that from the online magizine.

And why didn't the hardware change colour if that's the case (though the original pictures look like they have cream pickup rings)? The original pictures actually look clearer to me.
Hmm - it changed from purple to red if you ask me. And the hardware did change colour from goldish-silver to dirty-greyish silver.

Two hands31 The serial number makes no sense...

The W means it was built in Korea. But I can't figure out what year it was made in.

Since it's not in any of the catalogue scans on Rich's site (the swirly, bannera bove - they only go up to 2002) and it's not on the site, I'd say it's a 2003 model, not a very high-end one, but prettied up. It's not on either.

I recognize it though, and I recognize the name. I'd say it's almost definitely a 2003 model.

Allen Garrow Yeah it's still blurry,,, but it looks beautiful. It's sort of like a Bigfoot picture,, out of focus and stuff..... Yet You can see enough to believe that it's real, and it's cool.

Congrats dude,,, I hope it plays as nice as it looks.

ace_of_spadezz Well i think i can tell you that on two counts:

1. The camera is terrible and dosn't do much in the way of tint

2. The second set was taken in the day where as the first was taken at night when i had to use the lights. the color was distored at night i think becuase the lights weren't 100% white and the whole room is a yellowish color. The day light was pure white and therefore the pictures came out better ( i was able to get the camera near to a door so i could open the door and let some more light in).

this just a guess though

Two hands31 Um...why did your guitar change colours between the two sets of pictures?
08-14-2004 06:54 PM
