It's gorgeous. I'd own that in a heartbeat if I could justify another guitar.

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

It would be much prettier if the pickguard was clear. Perhaps it is, and it is just the photo that makes it look coloured.

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

I like it. Even the pickguard. IMO it is not useless, it's a scratchplate.

FP, BFP, GMC, PMC, MC and DNA all come with a clear pickguard, in some cases with body mounted pups.

WOW That looks nice. That pickguard is kind of useless. But still looks nice.

Pickguard = stupid.
Vine inlay = gaudily lame.

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

I do every one, but that wasn't the point. That's just one QC detail of many. IMO early JC's are that in badge only. The real quality and craftsmanship started showing up after 2000. And then again, how good the post 2000's are still depends on the hands that did them

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

Thanks for the info Rich. Thanks to all the restoration work I've been doing on guitars lately, I'm not too worried about fretwork and finish problems. I've done enough fretwork (including the fret rounding) to not worry about the frets. (Especially since I don't intend on selling that many anyway).

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

mine appears to have a certian amount of filing to the edges of the neck, as it appears the guy doing it got a little carried away up at the low B's 24th. The fretwork, however, seems a bit more even than I've come to expect from Ibanez.

...then again, for all I know that could be placebo effect brought on by buying a bloody expensive guitar. Either way, it plays phenominally, so I'm happy.

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

The 7CST I have here - no fret end finishing, at all, ziltch, nadda. And that 6 extra steps of sanding that makes the neck feel worn in? They forgot all 6 of them, ziltch, nadda. That includes every CST I've had, 6 or 7 string

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

quasi-confirmed - the fretwork on my CST is excellent, but no match for some of the closeups I've seen on recent JC's... Those perfectly rounded fret ends? Jesus. It's still a cut above what I'm used to in a high-end Ibanez, but cosmetically no match.

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

I figured you knew. But to elaborate, also stick to the post 2000 JC's. JC's before that [or most of them] have worse finishing details than todays regular production Prestige models.

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

I kinda realized that a long while ago, but thanks for the heads up. I don't intend on selling a whole lotta JC's. It'll be more a thing on the side for me (well, that and guitar repairs as well as pedal mods)

Re: Check out this j-custom (JC-FM1DBK)

You're going to quickly find out finding ones with margin are few and far between. There's a good reason I never have that many JC's in stock.
