Re: RG550 20th - best colour?

I just got a DY last week, so you know what my vote is. But I do like the RFR a lot and would probably get one also, if the wife would let me -lol.

Re: RG550 20th - best colour?

I couldnt choose between DY and RFR so I threw away my vote, if ya know what I mean.

haha look at this poll, it's funny that Ibanez made twice as many Blacks as DY's and RFR's.

TAKE THE HINT

I could see it looked uneven...but I wasn't sure if that was because of the fading or not.

Either way looks sweet in the pic! A refinish well done, imo

That's a faded RFR then, yes?

Looks much like a very hot pink...very much to my liking...

but the RFR without fading just doesn't do it for me...too red for me.

I agree. I like the look of a maple board that shows the wear from a player's fingers. I wouldn't buy a "relic" guitar, but if I get the RG20TH I ordered, I will play it and take pride in the wear I put on it myself. But some folks, like Dee points out, don't like it. What's the point?

We all have individual preferences and opinions and none of these are "better" than any other. But don't we all agree that more choices are better? It's possible to offer guitarists a choice of subtle or bright colors, maple or rosewood, ZR or LoPro, etc etc. The ratio of choices to cost will influence how well Ibanez (or any other company) succeeds.

I was thinking that'd be the theory too...

As much as I'd like Ibanez to use maple fretboards more often, I'm sure customers would have a hard time telling them "now when you play it a whole lot and it looks like crap, get steel wool and rub in the direction of the grain..." etc.

However my Ovation Viper 1271's (when they used to make solid bodies) maple fretboard has some kind of super smooth finish on it - it'll never get dirty.

Re: RG550 20th - best colour?

well I would like anything neon colourful, RFR and DY sound great. Maple boards! (drooling). I say DS because a return of an original would be very nice

Re: RG550 20th - best colour?

Maple is natively cheaper to obtain than Rosewood. Look at any place selling bodies or necks, Maple is the cheapest costing wood option. And Maple doesn't need a sealer, they choose to use it to give it more protection from wear. Even if there is a sealer it is the same sealer that they would use for the back of the neck as the neck is generally made out of Maple. If the neck is a 1 piece Maple neck then all the more ways it is cheaper to manufacture, so price isn't the factor.

Re: RG550 20th - best colour?

Well what better reason do you have? No, I wasn't kidding. The only other reason I can think of is cost. Rosewood doesn't need sealing or varnishing, it has enough natural oils so it doesn't need it. Maple does need some kind of sealer, so this is probably more costly than rosewood.

You've GOT to be kidding right? Thats about as lame an excuse for a company to use. Fortunately there is probably a better reason than that, but if that is their thinking they need to get their collective heads out of their a$$ as only an idiot would think that.

Re: RG550 20th - best colour?

That's your opinion, of course. I doubt Ibanez see it the same way when a 3 month old guitar looks 300 years old.
