Re: The New Custom Axe - DONE! w/pics

Sorry folks, hvnt been keeping up with the site. Jemwielder, where in Boston are ya at? I'm here too .

Athlon, thanks for the comment. It is absolutely my dream axe, but some people prefer more stripped down guitars (although this one is certainly stripped down wood wise, all natural wood with no paint). Thanks Dino for your comment .

Riverdragon, I would but theres nowhere to do it where I'm at, lest i take my guitar in the middle of the street, which isnt happening haha. Perhaps when I get back home to New York I can do that.

And Jemwielder, its an Air Norton in the NECK position (coil tapped), a cruiser in the middle, and an Evo 2 in the bridge position (coil tapped). I play primarily instrumental rock ala Andy Timmons and Steve Vai and such, and progressive metal. The evo 2 does a fantastic job covering a wide tonal palette, the air norton is my fave neck humbucker, and the coil tapping gives me all the cleans I'll ever need.

Thing looks like a beast!!! Looks like a cross between a jem and a PRS. That may just be because of the wood choices. I've always been a fan of lots of maple. I'm interested in your pickup choices, Correct me if I'm wrong but you've chosen the air norton for the bridge position? I've never heard of them going in bridge position. Not as high output right? Probably more of a vintagey sound. Looks very versatile regardless.

well done

I feel the same way.

Try taking pics outside. You can't beat good old natural sunlight to show what the guitar really looks like.

No, its not. I bought the neck from Legacy unfretted (just with the fret slots cut), and had my luthier hand install each fret as with my first custom (although that one had a neck completely hand built by my custom guy). My luthier also made some adjustments to the neck (sanding and refinishing the fretboard and the back of the neck, slight reshaping of the headstock, custom abalone inlay). My luthier is kind of a perfectionist, and the legacy neck although it was good quality and a great price was certainly not perfect. Still, 180 bucks for a neck with a AAAA flame maple fretboard and the vine inlay and all that, you've gotta expect that some little fixes will have to happen.

I don't allow any frets to pass my hands anymore unless theyve been pressed by my luthier. He is an absolute master when it comes to fretwork. If you slide your hand along the guitars neck you cant even freakin feel that it's been fretted. In fact lol one local repair guy i took it to, who has been fixing and building guitars for over 25 years, said that it was probably the best fretwork he had ever seen. THAT statement really hit me hard, and I passed it on to my luthier who was also quite proud haha.

Hey Shredder, good on you I say. Re the comment on fretwork, is that "stock" from Legacy or did your luthier do more fretwork on it?

Re: The New Custom Axe - DONE! w/pics

Yeah i think thats the one thing thats absolutely true about BOTH of my customs, they REALLY dont photograph well. Without flash, the colors come out dull and unrealistic, with flash you gotta deal with the random brightness in various spots. Maybe if i were a better photographer lol. The middle one's probably going to go eventually or get reshaped, but the rings themselves I went with figured korina for a reason, it matches the frame of the bod. I gotta say though pickup rings aside, this guitar is the best feeling and sounding one i've ever tried (including a PRS Private Stock and some other heavy hitters). The fretjob is hands down the best of over 100 guitars that've passed through my hands in the last few years.

Maybe darker pickup rings would look better. The middle one is really not my thing because it lacks symmetry.

I agree though that the video is more complimentary than the pics. Does not seem like the guitar likes flash photography.

I actually have a friend who claims he likes the strat knobs better on it cuz they match the pickups, but I think he's on crack =P

Got bored today during my "let my hand cool down" break, haha, so I took a few more pics. With the new knobs installed by the way! Finally got rid of those scary strat knobs. =]. Think it looks much better this way...

Re: The New Custom Axe - DONE! w/pics

Agreed man, thanks. That's kind of why I did the video, it's a lil easier to capture the nice nuances of it that way. And Robb, the knobs are going to go in favor of green abalone topped Q-parts ones (chrome dome style) to match the green vine, Im just waitin for em to come in the mail (should be Monday). My builder just tossed on whatever knobs he had lying around so I could use the guitar comfortably for the time being.

Re: The New Custom Axe - DONE! w/pics

I saw the video, I think it looks a lot better in the video than in the pics. Not that it was bad befroe see my first comment.

If it was my choice I would change the pickup rings. I guess maybe it's too late to have no pickup rings (screw holes), but I would do that and I would change the knobs to metallic domes. As for the rest of it I think it's cool. Gold hardware could be cool too. Headstock style is still up in the air.

All in all, I think it's awesome that you got a true custom guitar. My friend has 2 Gibson Custom Art and Historic Les Pauls. Totally custom made, but they are Jimmy Page's custom made guitars not his own and I don't understand that idea. If I spend a ton on a guitar it's definately going to be my original guitar. That's what you did, it's not a custom shop of someone elses guitar it is 100% you. That is pricelss.
