Neat idea!

I just hope that price doesn't come a standard.

Back to the subject at hand, after seeing the photos of the one that Called To Arms got from Rich, I have some pretty serious GAS for one myself. The grain pattern on that one is gorgeous.

Actually, Gibson has a system sorta like that now, they call it Push Tone:

Let's pray this system catches on and becomes a standard.

I'm still trying to decide what to put in my Saber. It has 2 humbuckers and two mini-switches. I get the feeling that no matter which ones I put in there, I'll still be thinking what other combinations would sound like.

the way my buddy explains the Paf Pro on the neck: "like a very huge warm blanket."
I upgraded his 2020X from an QM neck + Seymour bridge (forgot which one) and he loves how in-your-face, and dynamic the D-Sonic sounds on his axe. He's mainly a rhythm/stretched chords player; it works for him as he transitions from mid-gain > clean/piezo > mid-gain. He's able to use positions 2, 3, and 4 more often which weren't "useful" before the pup changes. Both are able to pickup complex chords with clarity.
I just ordered D-activator's for my S5470... should be installed in a couple weeks.

Rich, how does the JEM 7V compare to the S5470 in regards to sustain on the higher frets ?

Somebody else had changed the pickups with no change in sustain. I've wound them all the way down into the body with no change.

I left the stock Single coil middle in but its not hooked up its just a dummy. I replaced the the two Humbuckers and just have the guitar wired up for 3 positions. (I like the look of 3 pickups more but dont use the middle one much and couldnt afford a good active single coil for the middle anyways at the moment).

Re: S5470 review for Jem/RG Owners

didn't Rich post on the official ibanez forums that he tried swapping out the pups and was still having sustain problems ? Those forums seem to be down right now so I can't go back to verify

I bet it's the single coil with the increased magnet pull, that thing's got a lot of pull and it doesn't even sound good so it's coming out, as well as the other pickups. I'm going DiMarzio and only time will tell after the pickup swap.
You're right about the single coil... I was doing a setup on my TKS as well and was noticing horrible "metallic" buzz on the low E's 12th fret and up. Then I noticed how "high" the single coil was; lowered it down a few mm and the buzz was gone and I was able to lower the action a little bit lower. Mind you, i'm tuned to standard C on 11s. I do agree about the magnetic pull; do a whammy down with the trem and you'll notice the strings will begin "pulling" towards the single coil, more so than the bridge humbucker.
While the single coil's decent, I ordered an IBZ/USA C2 for consistency with my other axe's. Plus I can't seem to find short creme covers :P

also for anyone with spare time, try reversing the stock bridge pickup with the bar facing the bridge. Sound is not quite as aggressive and in-your-face like a D-Sonic but has enough punch and grind.

Hey dude, yeah I agree it's gotta be the electronics. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with the sustain when playing unplugged. It sustains just as good as any other high end guitar I've played but truth is when you're plugged in notes decay a little to quickly in the higher frets.
It kind of makes no sense at first but then you just realize it's gotta be the pickups or the pots.

I got my S5470 TKS a few weeks ago and it's not going anywhere, incredible guitar. I've noticed weak sustain on the upper register too but it's not too bad actually.

Re: S5470 review for Jem/RG Owners

I received my s5470 last week and as much as I was excited about it, after a week of playing, i'm returning it this week.
The guitar itself feels great and is very easy/smooth to play on. Also, I agree with just about everything posted in the review.
However, the 'myth' about the sustain is sadly not a myth at all.
This morning I compared it to my s470 DXQM with stock pups and there really is no comparison. The sustain on the s5470 dies off in about 3 - 5 seconds. It just get choked out. Now on the s470, the sustain lasts 20+ seconds.
This is played on the 19th fret on the B string, same attack, same pressure, straight up cable swap with no settings changed.
I guess it depends on what style you play whether or not this will make a difference for you, but sadly for me it does make a big difference.
Very dissapointing, I guess I'm going to look for a JS or a JEM now...
