Well you know, if you got money and are bored why not? I mean, heck, he was in a huge band and he did play lots of concerts, and then he was in another, pretty successful, band playing lots of concerts, so you know, there are a lot of opportunities to show them off. Unlike most of us, who are lucky enough if one other person we know in real life, not on the net, actually cares what a Jem 777vhw or whatever you play is.

I think you are right except I'd say two electrics minimum: fixed and trem, two acoustics: classical and steel string (I like classicals a lot).

I'd say a decent collection would be one stratty sounding guitar, one LP or set neck mahogany guitar, a fully recessed trem superstrat, a tele, something like a ES-335 and then one deadnaught acoustic, one classical, a different sounding steel string, maybe a 12 string, acoustic.

For me that would be enough to record all the guitar parts I could think of. So how many is that? 8.

Then, I would like to have 8 guitars. If I was gigging a lot I'd have to have a back up for the guitars I use th emost and that woul dbe my superstrat (Ibanez RG) so then I'd take the count up to 10 (2 backups) would be a decent collection for a someone who is a serious musician and records and gigs a lot.

I on the other hand have just one guitar.

Bare minimum 2 electrics (Fixed and trem) and an acoustic, I'd prefer 17.

Re: How many guitars is enough?

I'm at 9 but I'm about at my limit and may sell some of them. I've become more a creature of function. I find myself wanting to hear the different things I can get out of an RG. I'm also drifting more towards fixed bridges due to their simplicity and improved sustain. I don't use the bar much to begin with.
Most are either used or Indonesian too.
The last one I got was a DT-200 used off the bay. Just got a Super Distortion and a Humbucker from Hell. With those, a fixed bridge, and a large mahogany body it should sound monstrous!
I'd like a RG7321 next to have a fixed 7 that I can retune easily.
I also like the RGT42; the black fixed bridge that didn't come with EMG's. A mahogany neck-thru fixed bridge with a Tone Zone. mmmmmmmm!
The ICT700 in white would be nice too, but IMO it's priced far too much above what I think it's worth. Maybe I'll wait to find a used IC400 on the bay and put in Deactivators.
The RG321 is really nice too, and at $300 still a good bargain!

I going to say At least 7...

I have four right now, just sold two so around seven is a good number.

Oh man, what a can of worms to open. I say you can never really have too many, the more the merrier! Right now I have nine (counting my basses and the one acoustic I have), and they all get played. Each guitar has a different personality and a different purpose...often used for different tunings or different music. Although, really, I have four electrics that get played more than the rest. I think five is a pretty good number...realistically speaking, you could probably get any kind of sound you want with five guitars.

Re: How many guitars is enough?

Yeah, I have to apologise for that. Starting this thread has made me realise how many guitars there are that I really need to at least play, if not own, eg; never even played a 7 string!

Re: How many guitars is enough?

hahahaha... well i guess if you have the cash you can go and buy whatever you like and feel like it...
but for the poor like myself... i'd say 10 is enough...
2 floyds
2 strats
2 lp's
1 acoustics (even if you have an electric with piezo)
and backups...
but then there is the shapes...
oh my god... i just realize that i need 5 guitars to complete my poorly gas... hahaha
