Its a guitar just play it. Dont worry about it. You cant do anything about it, so dont worry about it.

Re: Cracks on RG770 Reissue Neck Joint

My 87 550 has those too. I handle it with care, but the owner who had it for like 20 years before I bought it could've done something to it.

But is it possible to counter this? I'm planning on repainting my guitar soon, and I would like to know if there's anything I could do to remove or minimize the risk of cracks developing further on?

Sorry to hear that. My 770 has no problems. I play it more than my jems now.

haha this is funny because the first 770 reissue that was inside my sam ash had a njfc and i was probably one of the first consumers to touch it!

Re: Cracks on RG770 Reissue Neck Joint

yeah I got a RG770DX reissue in Lazer blue and out of the box it had a finish crack at the neck joint. But worse was that there was numerous finish flaws underneath the pickguard around the pickup cavity. I sent it to Hoshino USA to fix. I'm really bummed about it. I have no idea how long it will take to get it back.

Re: Cracks on RG770 Reissue Neck Joint

My EB/MM JP7 developed 2 neck joint cracks almost immediately after I brought it home. It was delivered to the store and I checked it out and picked it up on Friday, and it was fine. When I opened the case Sunday there was a crack on either side of the neck.

Great explanation and insights guys. I guess thats what the ibanez guys figure back then as well. My RG550 is doing fine, so could be that these are doing much better than it newer brother.

Re: Cracks on RG770 Reissue Neck Joint

IMO 90% of these are caused by shock, mainly from shipping. The rest can be attributed to trem use [max to least tension and reverse] and sometimes just by the way the guitar is picked up by the neck and handled. They will always be a problem with basswood, not that no other woods get them. I've had alder and mahogany both with heel cracks, but predominantly you'll find these on basswood bodies. Most likely because basswood grain in very straight and there is very little resin in the wood to act as a binder.

HDS is absolutly right ,sad to say for yourself, you may be lucky though fingers crossed. As people have already stated, the neck pocket is designed to be very tight ect heat wont cause this and poly alone is not the problem, its upward and downward movement on the neck, if ibanez had placed metal pieces into the wood of the neck pocket it would help but probably wouldnt solve the problem, kinda like what peavey did on the woofgangs. If you intenionally pull (not a good idea) on the neck it has a surprising amount of movement and concidering some of the necks are almost vacume tight fitted! that spell cracks. always has always will unfortunatly. Your neck fit might have been mega tight to begin with which will only exacerbate the problem. Which is no concelation to you but, what can you do.

Re: Cracks on RG770 Reissue Neck Joint

There's a guy on the Ibanez forum who had the same problem with the RG770 re-issue. I think his was cracked the day he got it.

My 2007 RG550MXXRFR is doing just fine, thankfully. Played regularly, even has suffered some mild temperature variation, but no neck joint finish cracks at all.

Does Ibanez's warranty not cover that?

Re: Cracks on RG770 Reissue Neck Joint

Wow thats wierd. I own several ibanez (Rg550,Jem,s540) and none of them have that not even my old RG550.
I guess i have been lucky.
