Re: Favorite Fusion Guitarist

Yeah, thats a good point. As far as I understand, fusion seems to be jazz and something more, for example rock+jazz=fusion. But I guess it could be something totally different like country as well? Maybe even classical+jazz=fusion...? Where's the limit?

good point....to be honest I'm still trying to figure out exactly what 'fusion' means...especially when I look at the list and see guys that I consider 'rock' guitarists...in any case I don't think I could pick one off that list - Santana, Beck, Morse, Govan, Howe - how do ya pick 1...I can't do it...

Re: Favorite Fusion Guitarist

Since it says "favorite" I voted for Jeff Beck because the stuff he did with Jan Hammer opened me up to an entirely new world of playing. If it said "best" I would say I don't know.

I've been listening to this album again myself for the last week or so, and it is an astounding album, just superb groove and pocket playing with chops galore. DEFINITELY worth dusting this one off and putting it on again, if anyone was looking for something different to pop in the car stereo this weekend

"Govanator"... I like that.

But I'd have to say Chris Poland, I think.

I think Greg Howe's 'Introspection' is the best album I ever heard. The music is just so... I don't really know how to put it... Nice? For the moment, he's the guitar player that gets my vote!

Looked at some videos with John McLaughlin and Allan Holdsworth, and I'm totally amazed how they, well, approach the guitar as an instrument. The way they're using the guitar to make music happening is just... Nice? But unfortunately their musical pieces are a bit too advanced for me. I simply can't get the harmonies and melodies into my head, which is a sad thing. Perhaps I'll learn to appreciate music like this in the future!

(I should add though that I haven't been listening to all of these guys on the list.)

Gambale and McLaughlin :-) Mike Stern should be on that list too. Oh, and Larry Carlton of course!

I love Brett's music. I loved Big Sky everybit as much as Quid Pro Quo and Exempt, but I didn't like the Uncle Moe's Space Ranch albums quite as much.

His music is getting a little more mellow sure, but I actually think he's still getting better as a player. Really stunning legato technique.

My favourite fusion players are Allan Holdsworth, Brett Garsed, Scott Henderson and Shawn Lane (not so much his solo stuff, I prefer the Hellborg albums). Joel Hoekstra is also fantastic. He's quite similar to Guthrie Govan in terms of tone and phrasing, but I prefer his music to Guthrie's. Erotic Cakes sounded quite tired to me after having heard Quid Pro Quo and Exempt.
