Edge Zero vs ZR

What's the difference between the two apart from one using knife edges and the other using ball bearings and feel?

If both of them are made in the same place and have basically the same construction other than the pivots, why is the EZ getting a lot of bad rep around here while the ZR is getting good reviews?

I heard Ibanez is doing little improvements to the EZ (like the fine tuners?) so it should be on par with the ZR-2 in terms of construction, right?

Btw, misc info : From what I read from Japanese forums, the EZ gets a really good reputation from the Japanese because of the innovations, and they hate the Edge Pro because "it looks lame" and "it's a PITA to adjust the intonation on it". Most of them also avoid J-Customs because the inlays look bad to them. I find this difference of opinion very interesting compared to Jemsite :D

Bump, I tried the RG2770Z in a store, and checked out the EZ. Seems to be made really well, and the fine tuners really improved from the earlier EZ equipped models that I checked side by side (they're easier to turn, the older ones are harder to turn) albeit not having much "grip" on the fine tuners. Reminds me a bit of the OFR fine tuners.

As a whole, it feels a bit stiff, but it's solid, well made and feels like a fixed bridge. I don't think MIC vs MIJ quality in the Prestige RG trems really matter anymore in the case of Ibanez.

Btw, this is coming from the owner of a LoPro Edge trem :D

I made this thread for potential buyers (including myself) who are doing their research on these trems. I still want to know opinions of people who owned an EZ equipped guitar, since I've only played it for around 20 mins tho, so please drop in your experiences :D

I've got 3 Edge Zero J-Customs. Love all three of them!
I also have an Ibanez Universe with the Edge Pro trem to compare.

I really, really like my Edge zero trems. They stay in tune perfectly whether I am working in the studio as I frequently do or playing live. That being said, with Rich's stud mod that I installed on my Edge Pro, it works very well also. One thing I am adding to the edge Pro setup is one of those ESP arming adjusters.

all in all, the EZ trems work great for me. One of mine is a couple of years old and the fine tuners have loosened up nicely now and there is no issue with them.

Thanks for the review! I guess that you don't have any problems with them, so in a way it makes me at ease thinking of buying a new Prestige RG :D

From what I read in another thread, people are treating the EZ as if it's in the same class as the Edge III..

Safe to say that people are starting to accept the EZ now huh?

No, they just haven't hit this thread yet.

I have no opinion never having tried an EZ or Edge Pro.

Re: Edge Zero vs ZR

I've actually had 4 of them.....I sold one of the J Customs because I had a friend who really wanted it so I sold him the one that I was not playing and I didn't like the flame top on it. Not one problem with any of them. I had all three guitars in the studio doing some work for Pixar. I was running 12 hour days with them for 3 weeks straight. No issues with tuning, etc. I was keeping track on a Peterson rackmount strobe tuner as well during the sessions. I'm going to try my UV777 Universe with Rich's stud mod and the Esp backstop when I am recording and playing live this summer. I don't expect to have any issues with the Edge pro setup on that either.

The one thing that I'm always worried about.....this apparently (and according to our Rep up here) has been one of Ibanez' worst year for sales. Some are saying it is because of the new trem, etc. In any case, he was telling me that they will be going back to the Edge Pro setups for 2012, apparently. Perhaps the Jem and Satch models are the early indicators of this?

Again, Rich is pretty much the guy in the know for this kind of thing. I was just relaying what the rep told to me. Again, everything is a rumour and you just can't always believe that stuff until you hear it from the main source.

Normally reps in the US would not know this type of news. Decisions like that are made in Japan and might be shared with head guitar buyers from distributors, but generally will not be announced as news past that. Now if somebody is talking around and news spreads, maybe it's true [I can only hope], or maybe it's just another of the many rumors in the mill.

what you're trying to do is answer your own questions and build a good reputation for the EZ in this forum...

IMO EP>EZ,and thats with tangible facts, not like it gets in my way,or it is super hwavy or anything.

why cant they offer all three of their trems?loPro,edge pro and edge zero and let people choose from them?...and based on those ratings they can keep the one that sells the most

Re: Edge Zero vs ZR

That would put them in a whole other logistic of custom ordering. It wouldn't work for them. The biggest problem that I always find with Ibanez is that they don't make enough of certain higher demand models. That new RGD2127ish 7 string model is tough to find up here in Canada. They are backordered deep until October according to my rep. Why not produce enough so that you can sell more. He ended up getting me a great deal on an Ibanez Universe that I needed for some lower stuff that I have do this summer. Again, I would have rather had the RGD guitar for something a bit different but I can't complain. I just wasn't able to wait on this so I got something that worked nicely.

Makes sense to me. I actually like the Edge Zero - I have a RG 2550Z and the bridge has been a very pleasant surprise.

If Ibanez sales are down maybe it's got something to do with the new neck dimensions - 58mm width at last fret - that they seem to be using on all of their new high end models. Seems like the consensus amongst my guitar playing buddies is that we all find the new necks too wide and prefer the 56mm width necks better - but I guess that's for another thread...

Re: Edge Zero vs ZR

My favourite trems to date are without a doubt the Lo Pro Edge on my Jem and the Edge Zeros on my j-customs. I've owned two Edge pro Rg Prestiges in the recent past and I did not like the trems compared to the rest. I sold the guitars and got j-customs with Edge Zeros instead. In the end, I recon the mentioned trems all fall in the top bracket of Trems, some probably just prefer one over the other. I certainly have my favourites... I haven't owned a ZR bridge yet. I do like how they feel though.

The reason I've grown so very fond of Edge Zeros is 1. They stay perfectly in tune regardless of what I throw at them. 2. There's no rattles or any secondary sounds coming from them 3. Intonation settings are a breeze and 4. They make for the quickest string changes ever and even detuning can be done on the fly. My Lo Pro Edge, as much as I love it, will throw a fit when a string snaps or when I want to do a quick detune. (I still love the stability and feel of a LPE regardless!) EZ's are extremely stable imo. I was very apprehensive when I ordered my j-customs because of all the negative hype surrounding the EZ's. I'm very happy that I didn't base my purchase on all the negative publicity. In my experience, most of the "facts" about EZ's are absolute nonsense...

Edge Zeros are EZ...

Have you got any pointers to these forums? I've had no luck in finding relevant Japanese guitar forums, and I'd very much like to see what they're thinking about things...

The Edge Zero stays in tune incredibly well. I tuned mine last week after taking the ZPS out and small adjustments, and it's been in tune since then, after lots of bends and whammy abuse, and I haven't even upgraded to Lo Pro studs yet.
